Oils ain't oils........

Just had the 2000km service done today. The engine oil used was Castrol TWS 10w-60......$250 for 5 litres is the normal cost!! Is that right?? Has anyone bought any for less??

When I drove the car out of the dealership I noticed the electronic dipstick showed the oil level was the same as before I took the car in ie: half full. Being a bit suprised I did a U turn and there was a bit or running around as no-one seemed to know why this was happening as they reckon they had put in the right amount of oil. Anyway I drove the car home and about 15 minutes into the trip *ping* the oil level went up to full!

What's wrong with the old dipstick method???

There are a bunch of threads on the oil changing process and how it takes a specific set of steps to have it read properly etc. As for the price, it is quite costly in the US as far as oil goes, so it is likely expensive in Australia as well.

AMK - not sure how thignswork on in Perth but in Melbourne at least my dealer tops it up for free.

There'sa bit of running around but its usually to check if I need a coffee while I wait for the top up to be completed.

Agreed. No charge for the 2,000km service or any oil top ups.. I take the X5 in more often than the M3 for oil top ups & grab a coffee while I wait the 5-10 minutes it takes.

We do get top ups in Perth too... thru pitstops where where the oil, coolant and tire pressure is checked. Such service is across the board Australia-wide regardless where you live. You can drop by at any time and this is done while you wait, and enjoy a coffee or browse thru the model range.
AMK2912:
The 2000km running in service is free and why did you pay $250. By the way the car takes 7.5 litres when changing the oil filter.

Do you have to tell them to top up the oils for free... or is this a standard practice for BMW dealers in Oz?

Standard at mine too - 1200 km service completely free. And like LuKe450, my wife's 4.8 X5 drinks oil like it is going out of fashion. The car is 2 years old and haven't paid for any oil for it either !

Plus they also clean the car inside and out if I leave it there to have the oil changed (and I get a decent loan car for free too).

Sweet. Sounds like quite a deal - I'm a newbie to BMW Service - after the first free service what is the average cost for servicing an M3 E92?

I was interested in what the Castrol TWS 10w60 cost, but you're right....you just get them to top it up during a pitstop service. I've had pitstop services for all my BMWs.

My wife's 3.0 X5 drinks oil too....they topped up 800mL the last time. It's going in for an oil service next week and I'm expecting to pay about $600!

What is it with all the german manufacturers taking the dipstick out of their cars? BMW, MB, Porsche - they all have. Has VW as well?

I'm wondering if it's to stop people using those roadside oil change places I remember from Europe in the 80's. The ones that would suck the oil out of the dipstick.

Daylight robbery! I grew up in NZ and remember concerts at an outdoor venue called Western Springs, which is actually a dirt speedway oval sitting inside a natural amphitheatre, and having to pay $18 to see Elton John, Neil Diamond, etc. That was a lot of money back then.

Back on track....

What's the difference (if any) between Castrol TWS 10W60 and Castrol Edge 10W60? Are they the same product but one is branded specific for the M3?
