Difference between JB+ at max setting vs. JB3 ??
Hi guys,
I have a msport 335i on order and i'm starting to plan out my mods. One huge concern for me is keeping the factory warranty since i've been down that path far too many times where mods basically voided my warranty within the first few months of owning a car. The idea of the JB+ caught my attention because it seems to be a simple install which you could remove within minutes if not faster. I just want to make sure that its not lacking some sorta "tuning" where I am doing harm to the engine where as the JB3 seems to be a full tune. I think I will be getting a BT scanning with either units but i'm not sure which one to go with. What are the main differences between a JB+ at max setting vs the JB3? Any insight is appreciated... From the BMS FAQ:
Q) What is the difference between the JB+ and the JB3? A) The JB+ features a faster install and does not require you to touch the ECU. The JB3 is a more robust system including map switching, direct boost solenoid control, throttle position mapping, and many other additional features that allow it to produce a lot more power. On average the JB+ gives 40-50hp to the wheels, while the JB3 gives 70-80hp to the wheels, on an otherwise stock car. Mike |

JB+= Cheap Easy to install and gives good power JB3=More advanced, little harder to install, costs over 2x JB+, and gives even more power.

I just don't want to get the one or the other and regret it down the line with warranty issues or because i want more power.
Is it true that with a BT scanner, there is zero chance for the dealer to see anything funky on the ecu that the car was running a tune? |

Its not about money...its more about which one is "better" for the car and less likely to cause any codes to pop up.
I would hate for the turbos/engine to blow down the road and I have to be worried about bmw denying my warranty because they saw something funky on the ecu. Has anyone blown their motors running either setup or have warranty denied even with a BT scanner? |

So with a BT scanner it is impossible for the dealer to see anything out of the ordinary from the ecu? Are there values that the scanner can't clear or access?
Thanks! Alan |

if it's not about the money
get a Dinan Stage 3, with full exhaust/FMIC/Intake upgrade cost you about 6k, maybe more... but then you'll be pushing a LOT of power with a Dinan backed warranty. :P |

JB+ is useful for small power increase, best left at moderate setting -- anything above 50% and you (a) risk codes, and (b) don't have other engine controls to run safely/reliably over the long term. Very easy install/removal. Inexpensive.
JB3 provides more boost and engine controls, but requires BT to scan and delete codes. For the price of a JB3, BT, and boost gauge you are around 1k+.

If you plan to race with your friends and other 335i guys and want as much engine power as possible, JB3 (or e.g. Procede) is the better choice. Unless the road is twisty, you will always be a couple of lengths behind a car that is provided with JB3 and other mods such as better flowing exhaust system etc. There are others vehicles though if you want to be real fast and the performance difference between JB3 and JB+ is not huge. It also depends on your references, a few shaved 10s on the ¼ mile is a lot for those competing in the same segment. I’m also driving a tuned Suzuki Hayabusa -08 and the 335 will always be slow compared to this, whether it has JB+ or JB3.
JB+ changes the car to be much quicker than stock for a low cost. It also has a lot less circuits and connectors making it more fail-safe. Others may disagree, but it is the number of circuits, connectors and added software modules that defines the reliability, and JB+ works on a safer level power-wise. It does exactly the same function as the ECU is designed to handle, changes the TMAP sensor signal, as it would change with altitude. It basically fools the engine it is used at a higher altitude than it is, thus initiating more turbo pressure, about 5 PSI more than stock. The engine will of course not be as good to compensate for high altitudes as before since the roof is almost reached already on sea level if JB+ is used on max setting. I think most people will feel a JB+ car is acceptably strong. 0-60 will be done in less than 5 seconds and the quarter mile may be propelled in 12's instead of 13's stock when conditions permit. I have come to the conclusion to stay with JB+ and enjoy the car as is instead of spending money to gain 10s of a seconds on WOT runs. |

^^This was the exact info I was looking for. Thanks
Is it possible to remove the JB+ with the stock air box in place? I didn't get my car yet so I'm not sure if its something that could be removed in a few minutes or a half hour. I like the idea of keeping the bmw software in tact and just have the JB+ trick it to do something it was designed to do in high altitude. Typically do cars with JB+ dyno what its advertised to have? Would you still benefit from adding an exhaust with the JB+? Alan |

It took me about 30minutes the first time I installed it because I didn't know what I was doing. I just removed it, changed the setting 75% from stock and reinstalled it in less than 10minutes. |

Sup alan? Dre told me you were getting a 335. Def beats teh Saab/Subi...i did the same thing...e46 (GBX330ci from e46fanatics), STI Ltd, 335....Anyway,
iirc, JB+ may not be invisible at max setting. JB3 on the appropriate map certainly is. Alan, n54tech.com has great if as its Terry's board (maker of JB). Also, where you getting your car from? Never had a problem w/ my JB3 at Rallye. PM me if you have other questions. Welcome back my man! |

Hey whats up dude...didn't know you still talk to Dre. I'm on aim with him every day
I ordered the car from Rallye out in LI too. If i went with JB+ I would probably leave it at the default setting. I just having a car that I have to worry about in case something blows up. Its like when I had the supercharger on the E46 I never really drove it that hard because i was afraid something would blow up. Didn't want to end up with a 10K bill from the mechanic or BMW. |
