335d DSG Gearbox??

Hi - Just wondering if the gurus on this site know anything about a forthcoming DSG gearbox for the 335d. I've searched on the topic and come up with nothing. Whilst the current gearbox is very smooth and well suited to the car, there is room for improvement and it would certainly widen the appeal of the car to have an improved gearbox.

Clearly, developing one which will handle huge torque not altogether straightforward (sorry BMW engineers, that might be an understatement)... I for one would think it would bring the car on somewhat.

Delay on changing up (edit 'down') for corners results in car feeling as though it 'lets go a bit', momentarily losing control. Still, once used to this and pre-empting it (ie changing up earlier) can avoid this. Just would be nice to completely trump Audis?? Changing down too and the hesitation can be felt on traction (slightly)... though probably better than manual changes most mortals capable of without double declutching.

The problem as you have already mentioned is the torque limitation of the DCT gearbox. Designing a dual-clutch gearbox that can comfortably cope with 800Nm of torque (once safety margins are taken into consideration), and still fit in a standard size casing, is really hard and although I'm sure BMW are working on something I doubt it'll be much before 2011 that we'll see something even remotely suitable.

Err thanks... I think I mean changing down (but going up or down there is a slight pause) - not a major problem, but does unsettle the car a bit. Certainly as time goes by, anticipating how the gearbox behaves enables smoother progress.

It is amazing that despite perhaps the ultimate control of a manual, just how much control is afforded with the flappy paddles and the auto' box and then for the rest of the time just how nice having such an accomplished auto is.

I mean Ferrari are still fine tuning there eDrive cue the new 458..

spiro I get the same hesitation on the 535d. The auto box does as a good a job as it can but it is an auto box.

Mainly because I couldn't find a comfortable driving position, engine lacked any character below 4/4.5k and some other minor issues, just didn’t do it for me.

Shame as they are a really good car to drive although I will miss the BMW feeling.

I has an S for 24hrs and I thought it was awesome, very quick esp with the PDK gearbox although I would not have it I would have a manual.

Nice car though mate, it's what I would have gone for if I hadn't have gone the Cayman route.
