when is the final price you pay decided?

Hi I just ordered a 328xi and gave my deposit, but i was wondering whether I can negotiate the final price after the car comes? The dealer never really mentioned how much he was going to sell to me for.

I have a bridge to sell - wanna buy? Me thinks you need to do your homework. How can you give a deposit on a car if you don't even know how much you are spending?

You are pretty much at the mercy of the dealer now. You should have gotten the selling price in WRITING before you ordered the car. I hope you bring some KY when you pick it up....

ID bet when he goes IN to see the CA he'll say, "HI! OK, MN. ME thinks DE car should cost this much plus TX and I won't pay any MO money. Otherwise IL go to my MA and PA. OH and you can KS this sale like it NV happened."

UT think the salesman would understand?

It is decided before you pay the deposit and sign on the line. You are now committed to whatever is listed as the price on the contract.

Just so I understand you correctly, you placed a deposit down on a 328xi estimated at $35-40k, and you're not sure of the FINAL price. Is that correct? Contact your CA immediately! You should NEVER buy anything without knowing the price. That's in business 101 class

He thinks you are paying MSRP and, if you are leasing, 825 for acq and 0.0004 over the MF.

So, in effect, you are pretty much the perfect customer from their point of view.

Did you send him any money? It's my understanding (depending on where you live) that part performance can bind you to an oral agreement even when you'd normally be able to claim the statute of frauds.

I'd get a price asap.

How much did you put down? If not much and they won't budge, walk away! You can try asking for your money back or try to canel the check if not too late. Good Luck!

What you need to do is tell the guy to send you a Buyer's Order that details what you both have discussed. Tell him you want it itemized with the car specs discussed, and the dealer fees, tag/title, and tax. That way you know exactly how much they plan to charge you OTD (out the door) and are sure the guy understands exactly what the order should be.

I'm unclear on how they received your deposit. I tried an internet sale once and the CA told me they'd mail me some papers so I can sign them and send / fax it back to them. So you should be signing something!

My advice to you is:
1. Get the Buyer's Order above ASAP
2a. If you're fine with it, then you're golden but ask about signing the deal so when the car comes everyone is clear that it is yours.
2b. Not fine with it? Negotiate. No can do / not happy / won't budge? Kindly ask for the deposit back or to be cancelled or cancel it through your bank.

If they didn't give you an OTD price, you might be getting screwed cos their given price may sound appealing, but you're unaware of the dealer fees, their new/transfer title fees, and the tax, which will all raise the price, esp. if their dealer fees are high.

Don't wait to negotiate "after" the car comes. You should be agreeing to the final price NOW before the order is finalized and you sign anything.

If it's a normal order, and not ED, my guess is that they wrote it up at full MSRP,if that doesn't work for you, demand your deposit back, they can always sell the car to someone else, and find someone who is willing to work with you.I would, but you would have to come here to pick up your car once it comes in.......thanks

More details

Hi guys.. Sorry I was in a rush when i wrote the first post. Here are some details, I understand most people here are thinking that I'm a total fool.

First of all, my background: I haf always bought cars at the dealership so it's always negotiated before the order. Howeer, this time, I was out of the country so I inquired online - my first time dealing with an internet salesman. I told him the specs and all and he gae me the MSRP and told me that if I place the order now I can hae it shipped earlier. He asked me how I'm paying, I replied cash and then he just asked me to gie him my credit card details for the deposit and he'll place the order for me. I know I was stupid to not ask whether it was refundable or not. Also he did not mention any prices throughout the entire discussion so I thought maybe it works different on the internet. I read all your replies and I appreciate the suggestions. But I ask again: Now that you know all these details what do you think I should do? It wasn't a written consent, no contracts were signed and the deposit was charged to my credit card.

Thanks a lot. As for the chicago dealer who pm'd me. I'm interested but will only consider if the dealers here don't work out.. it's too much of a hassle to drie 8 hours to and back from chicago.

Seems to me that if you can save $1000-2000 by driving eight hours, that is like being paid $125-250 an hour.

Dude, pick up the phone/email/visit your CA...whatever...start negotiating! Give him a chance...it isn't like it is his fault you were 'slow' enough to not do this before you made the order...plus I'm sure he is expecting you to start this process at some time.

Not sure how you can say he didn΄t mention any prices "throughout the entire discussion" when you say he gave you the MSRP and got you to agree to place an order. Sounds like he gave you a price. Why would you order otherwise?

Let us know if you are able to improve your situation.
