z4 Aluminium dash replacement

I have just bought a 2004 3.0 SE but the aluminiun dash, strip around the gear lever and door grabs are all scratched.

I have bought, via ebay, a BMW replacement set of new aluminium parts.

No fitting instructions.

Anybody done similar replacements and can provide fitting instructions or useful tips?

Much appreciated

Martin

i did the same swap when i replaced my wood for aluminum. the front dash is easy enough, it's the center console that's a pain in the arse. only concern was that the replacement dash doesn't come with those clips so you have to reuse your stock ones, but they easily fall out when you remove the stock pieces, and once they fall out, ure screwed... no way you'll be able to retreive them behind the dash.

I haven't seen an English version but when I swapped mine I didn't even need the translator. The pics are self explanatory and I don't think the missing ones should cause you any trouble (maybe showing the clip behind the right end of the dash trim). Also, for the center console (since I have removed that several times before for nav retrofit and trim change) you don't need to take off the shift knob, which is kind of hard. Just pull up the boot cover and slide the cover through the hole in the console.

I had to remove just the dash to install start button. The clip on the right end takes some patience other wise the dash portion is easy.

Here is a shot with it apart

Same problem here. Removed the Dash panels and door handles no problem at all using the guide. But the guide for the panels covering the transmission tunnel are missing a few steps not to mention inaccurate as far as removing the storage compartment door is concerned in my case. If anybody has abetter guide it would be much appreciated.

I like the brushed aluminium trim. It adds character. My '06 3.0I came with silver painted plastic which I swapped out in favour of an aluminium set I got of ebay. When doing the tunnel be careful with the trim disks covering the 4 nuts adjacent to the seats. I broke 2 of mine. Replacements from BavAuto were not only way expensive, but they were born tan and spray painted black - same thing from getbmwparts.

The only hard part is that mother!#!#$ clip on the right hand side of the console. It's one of those things where if you know how to operate it, it comes off like magic. If not, you'll be cursing the car for at least an hour. How do you think my first time with it went? ;D

I didn't even bother reinstalling it (the clip) once I put the dash back in place. I haven't noticed a difference regardless.

I'm about to take on replacing my aluminum dash trim. Have there been any other instructions discovered for this?

Remove the vent by inserting 2 flat blades between the top of the vent and the dash plate to release the clips(I used 2 putty knives) and it will slide out.
Remove the 2 screws that hold the radio in place and slide out enough to disconnect the antenna and the wiring harness. The harness has a bale on it that you have to squeeze and rotate to unlock the harness.
There are 4 Phillips head screws behind where the radio and vent was. 2 on top and 2 on bottom of the cavity.
Once all that is done grab the dash inside the cavity and tug. If it has not been out before it will be tough but keep tugging it will come.
If you need to "force" it off put the putty knives between the dash and the dash plate and pry gently.
As Nicky said the clips are a pain and most if not all will fall off inside the deep dark dash cavity.
I used an extendable handle magnet to retrieve them.

Thank you!

I was hoping more had been found in the way of diagrams and pictorials.

Sorry, not much of a pic taker.
Fairly simple process if you follow what I described.

I have removed and replaced the entire interior in the past but did not care if I broke anything during removal as it was absolutely shot from the Fla sun.

Search on the interior portion of this forum. I believe there are some threads on there.
