New or Used
Well i just inherited a good bit of money, with most of it going to pay off the house I have left myself with $45000 for me and my wants. and what I really want is a BMW. would really like a 335i but cant afford it new. or I can get a fully loaded 328i. should I go new or used. Things I must have 6mt, sport, premium, ipod/usb, idrive/nav. is the 1 series even worth looking at? dealers where i live only order their cars in auto so looks like i am going to have to drive far to find a 6 speed. This will be my first car in this price range so I dont want to make a poor choice.

Lease depreciating assets, buy appreciating assets. Unless you think the mod bug will hit you.
If you have to order your car, it's no big deal. Dealers make it smooth and you can order exactly what you want. Be sure to drive both the 328 and 335 to see what suits you best, along with the 1 series if that interests you. All of them are good cars, you won't be disappointed. CPO cars are generally fine as well. They're most often lease returns, so they have been maintained by the dealer. It just depends on what you want in the car, what you want to spend, and if you lease or buy. You can't really lease a CPO, and it will be more difficult to find a CPO 1 series since it's a relatively new car for BMWNA. Check out BMWUSA.com to see what options are available on these cars, go to the dealer to check them out and drive them, and then you can make your decision of buying new or CPO.

Are you planning to drop the entire amount on a car? If so, just get the 335i new and take out a small loan for the rest. If you want to save a good bit of that money, you can't go wrong with a CPO. The 07 335s should be coming off leases by the end of this year and early 2010.

If you will only have $45,000.00 left over, I think your first mistake is planning on spending it all on a car. JMHO.
I would go for a 07 335, can prolly get one near $28k or so and have much money left over. Would feel pretty good having house and car paid off with close to $20k still in the bank. (that is all considering a car is a high enough priority in your life to pay cash for it, I personally would never spend my own money on a car when I can spend the banks instead, and let them make a measily 0.9% on me. Then I would still have $45,000.00 to invest or just sit on for the down payment for a house on the beach somewhere) Actually I would probably go get a 05 or so Chevy Malibu (daily driver), and pick up a 02-03 Porsche 911 Turbo for somewhere around $35k at Manheim. (still only putting down a minimal payment when financing)

CPO is cool, but it made me very uneasy thinking that the car i was going to buy was beat on and driven hard. in the end i went with 335i coupe. trust me-you want the 335. another option you have is to lease. 2010s are gonna be here very soon. you can order your car, pick it up 6 weeks later, lease or 3 years and then decide what you want to do in the end. 335 lease. do it. good luck and keep us posted.

If I were you and had that budget, I'd get the 335 but dump the iDrive to get it into your price range. With a decent discount this will work for you. This way you get a brand new car with the full warranty.
Thanks, Mike. |

DON'T drop all that on a car. You can finance one for 1.9% now. You can make more money investing. Put like 10K down and finance the rest, and invest the rest of the 35K.

I applaud your financial choices. Though, I would've left a few dollars on my house as a tax shelter. By a year old CPO with about 10, 000 miles or fewer. It will be just like brand new and about $10,000 cheaper.

I wouldn't have paid off the house, especially if the interest rate was low.

The 335i is no Honda accord. The car isn't known for its spectacular reliability, but its driving ability. CPO warranty doesn't cover everything, buy used only if you can and know how to work on a BMW by yourself, otherwise buy/lease a new one, have an ease of mind, and take advantage of the low interest rates. You'll thank me later.

I could not afford a new one, but I agree to save your money I mean I got a 2006 325xi for half the price of a 2009 328xi with the same options. Yes its 3 years older but saving $20,000 is pretty nice.

get used from a dealer!!
believe it or not i am happier i went with used. here was my deal. 19k miles navi and premium black on black. 25k was the price. i traded a mini cooper s for 8.5k i am paying .9% finance on the rest, 300 a month... and it was basically just broken in for me and i have 100k mile warrenty. so literally i am paying 300 a month for everything including service. cant get much better than that. try to find a dealer to make "deals" with. |

They've been doing 0.9% on CPO for a while. Only 2006's though, and only up to 36 months. Used to be up to 48 months back in March/April.
