Arguably the two best companies in terms of finish and durability are Pristine Alloys in Milton Keynes, or Lepsons in either Gillingham or Swindon. Both can also repair cracks and straighten buckled wheels, to a finish much better than OEM. I have had four sets of wheels all done at Lepsons and they came out brilliantly.

Do the tyres need to be off for a refurb?

Approx cost?

Lepsons would get my recommendation.

I've had 2 OEM sets done + 2 G-Powers refurbed with a perfect colour match each time

Will, Lepsons (Kent) is a long haul for you, but they will do wheels with tyres on or off.
If the tyres are on they just whip them off, depending on how bad the damage to the wheel is, they might leave the tyre on.
They do good deals on tyres from local suppliers (new, price match) and offer all the services a good tyre outlet offer, not sure about alignment though.

Cost for OEM is approx 60/70 notes (comparable to a dealer price).

I'll be going back to Lepsons shortly

At both Pristine and Lespons, they take the tyre off the wheel completely. The wheel then goes into an alcohol-solution tank for a minimum of six hours, which strips off the lacquer and paint down to the smooth bare metal. The solution doesn't damage the actual metal though as it's not the sulphuric-acid formula of old.

The wheels are then repaired accordingly, before being powder coated, primed, painted, then lacquered. The tyres are put back on and the wheels rebalanced.

Average retail cost for a 19" wheel refurb is about £85 I think, that's with your choice of paint and colours. If you want a fancy two-tone finish, or diamond turned edges, then it's obviously more money.

For the results you get, and bearing in mind it's a whole lot more than one of those SMART fixes, I think it's great value.

Lepsons never leave the tyre on - all their repairs are back to bare metal then refurbed. The reason is that they guarantee their work and finish, and if they just patch up a wheel by overpainted and spot lacquering, the minute those wheels go through a harsh winter the chances are the repair will fail as the lacquer/paint won't be keyed in as well.

I've got heavy black deposits, mainly on the two fronts so I guess it's brake related. Nothing I have tried will shift it, BMW rim cleaner, Tardis etc. The outside face of the alloys is very good so maybe a total refurb is a little OTT.

If you get down south early enough on Thursday, I'll have a go at removing the spots with some stuff I've got here...

Viv & Floyd are coming down Wednesday night as Floyd's having things done to his car at Birds on Thursday morning. We'll probably be done there just after lunch, and I'll take them over to the hotel. Dinner's at 8pm... so sometime mid-afternoon? What time are you coming down anyway? Or you could come down in the morning and meet us at Birds... at least there I can put the car on the ramp and take a wheel off to try and get clean...
