LSD in a 335d? Possible?

Hi Guys,

I have a 2009 US 335d that I picked up and wanted to install a wavetrac lsd. I was told that rumor has it that the diffs are welded in like the 335i manual.

Is this true? Any experiences - good or bad?

Cheers,
Jim E.

You can still have a Quaife LSD differential fitted. Speak to birds. Tony (E92Fan) will be along shortly with their tele number.

Several UK forum members have it fitted to there 335D.

Birds will tell if it's welded or not, once you prove the VIN no.; wavetrac is an interesting alternative and it's cheaper....

If you have a 2009 car of any model / transmission its fairly certain that the crown wheel will be welded onto the diff. (the diff isn't 'welded in', it refers to the crown wheel attachment)

Birds can arrange an exchange unit to suit your car. i.e. they ship you the new diff with crown wheel (in a full casing if you wish) but charge a refundable deposit that you get beck when you ship them your old diff.

Heard a few non UK people have done this by post with success.

Wavetrac - possibly Birds/Quaife nemesis.

Possibly, a big steaming turd.

We don't know yet really.

Its an alternative LSD which sounds really, really good on paper, spec wise it's 'better' than Quaife but it looks 'unlikely' to fit most of our cars, until 'someone' tries it and even then, it seems they will struggle to accommodate different years and models which is not a problem Quaife/Birds have.

Its much cheaper than the Quaife. Personally, I hope it fits easily, and turns out to be a good product and that it can be supported fully in the UK....

I am all for a fair market, and personally I think the price of the Quaife is prohibitive although I DO NOT doubt its quality.

The wavetrac is available for the 335i apparently, but not the 'D'.

So Matt, you've ruled out the diff, so your mods are becoming more and more obvious!

The 335i application of the wavetrac will be for a bolted crown wheel.

But, just a thought, if your car has a welded standard diff, can't you buy a loose bolted crown wheel from bmw and fit it to a diff with no crown wheel?

Or won't bmw sell a loose crown wheel?

Entirely agree.... Birds have obviously invested some serious cash into R&D, though would surely realize significant increase in returns if they lowered their prices / had some offers, they are marketing their products as some kind of MER currently... which of course to some extent they are, but no one can afford (except drug dealers.... footballers etc)!

What's MER?

Quaife LSD is V reasonable IMO (£800). Only BMW have f##ked that up by using stupid welded crown wheels to save a few pence in manufacture.

The cost of machining off the crown wheel is what kills the affordability of the diff. Wavetrack etc will have the exact same problem with their diffs.

Mine's being fitted soon and I am neither a drug dealer nor a footballer when the quote came through, they gave me 10% off list without me even asking!

My quote fitted from Birds was definately cost prohibitive, even with a 10% discount. I am certainly not going to list it as I think that Birds are a very reputable company, who I may well deal with in the future and I absolutely do not want to suggest that they are trying to rip anyone off etc.

Just personally for me, well, its more than I wanted to spend.

To give you an idea, I got a 10% discount too, and it was close to £2000 fitted inc vat because its LIKELY but not guaranteed that I have a welded diff.

Because of the month of my cars birth, Birds cant tell from the VIN whether its a welded or bolted diff so we quoted me for welded and we are hoping for bolted lol.

Or rather, we were hoping for bolted
