Do Corvette's feel as fast as they are?

2010 Chevy Corvette Grandsport

0 to 60mph- 3.9sec
0 to 100mph- 8.8sec

16/26mpg

1/4mi- 12.2@ 117mph

.99g

http://www.motortrend.com/roadtests/...est/specs.html

I swear I'd pick up a used sample one day for about 30k.

The Z51 Vette was on my short list of cars when I bought the 135i a year and a half ago, and IMO, yes they do. Even the automatics. The last one I test drove lit the tires up so hard on the 1-2 shift that the traction control stepped in. It put a huge shit eating grin on my face and a look of horror on the salesman's.

I was driving a lightly modded GTO at the time that would run high 12 second 1/4 mile times, so it's not like I was comparing it to a Civic either.

To me the downside to the Vette at the time was more about the way it felt than how it performed. It wasn't that it was bad, but you could feel the GM DNA in the steering and brakes, and it reminded me a lot of the GTO and previous GM cars I'd owned, and I was looking for something different. I still question whether I made the right decision, and if they had been offering better deals at the time I would probably be driving one right now.

When it comes to new cars, you simply can't go faster for less money.

Thanks a lot for the write-up Jeremy. I can related with what you're saying in terms of feeling the "DNA." It's not always a bad thing though. :-)

HELL YAH THEY DO!!!!

My last Vette was a 04' Z06, which we all know has even less power then the standard Vette now. It is VERY quick and feels everybit of it. I got rather spoiled by my Z06, and to this day, I have not been happy performance wise with any car I have had since. That includes an Audi S4, BMW 335i w/ turbo tuner, and now the M3.

But I require a 4 door these days, since I am now family man and not single young man anymore.

I have said it before, as soon as the little one is out of a car seat, I will be right back in a Vette, hopefully a Z06 variant.

Some naysayers, will say the Vette is cheap and a straight liner, and to them, I say, go drive one. When the Z06 came out it dominated the autocross courses.

Consider this, even the previous C5 Z06 going back to 04' blows away the current M3 in performance, with 5YO newer technology.

A current base Vette w/ Z51 or a previous Z06, is a supercar without the supercar price and materials.

Stats on a C5 Z06:

Weight: ~3150 lbs
HP: 405
TQ: 405
0-60: 3.9
lateral g's: 1.06 , that is STOCK boys and girls, right off the showroom floor.

It is the only car I felt completely happy with.

I am not saying that the M3 isn't great, especially going into an M3 from a lesser car, but you go from a Z06 to anything else south of $100K and you will be dissapointed from a performance standpoint.

Cool

They actually feel faster then they are listed, power wise.

The feeling of a C6 at WOT is much more adrenaline inducing than an M3 (comparable power) at WOT.

That would be because of the 100+ more TQ and 200 - 300lbs less weight the Vette has over the M3

Ah Barry - absolutely - the only stinky thing in my mind about Corvette's are the seats - but a set of Recaros would fix that. A Z51 with the Lt3 package and the 6 speed manual and I'd be really happy. But for a GT car I like the 1er better. But a man can do some serious driving in a Corvette!

A client of mine was telling me about the ZR-1 having the same problem too!! I'll have to drive one of these cars pretty soon.

I've seen C5 Z06's around here for about 20grand. :-)

yeah but spend a few grand on some good seats and you'll have the perfect seats for your body type. I did for my M3 and I couldnt be happier w the result

The seats are consistantly griped about in the reviews as well. I didn't really notice it as much of an issue, but maybe it depends on weight/build.

Either way, it's surprising that GM hasn't done something about it. It's such and easy fix, and the supplier they're getting the current seats from could probably alter the existing design to fix the issue without a ton of expense. Sometimes GM just makes me with little stuff like this. Once you've got the performance (and they certainly have nailed that part) it's the attention to the small details is what makes a car a "world beater", and they just seem to let things slip a little, even things that would add little if any cost.

My daughter managed to snag rides with me in press fleet C5 Z06s when she was in high school. Going through a sweeper at speed on a secondary road, she said, "Dad, don't send me to college, buy me a Corvette."

The long hood on the vet makes it feel slower imo, I never could get used to driving my boss's c6 z06 fast.

Yes they do. My 01 Z06 was pure, raw power - cam only with 440 at the ground.
I miss that car at times...

thanks! Over the winter I plan on purchasing a used rear seat back out of an M3, cutting out the M tri-color stripes and having them stitched into the new fronts. that will complete my interior very very nicely
