318D - 320D What's the difference?
Is it the turbo, the ECU mapping, both?
If they have the same 2.0L engine, what's the difference? It seems pointless spending loads of extra money if I can re-map the 318d and squeeze the same out of the engine... I'm guessing it's to do with boost? Smaller turbo perhaps and less boost? Cheers... |

There are a number of differences (e.g. camshaft, mapping), turbo is the same, but you can easily map a 318d to exceed bog-standard 320d power. If you don't mind voiding the warranty....

Its the same as the 320i and the 318i i am lead to believe. I know its a lot harder to get gains through a petrol with a remap but i am sure it can be done as long as you dont mind losing the warranty haha.

If the turbo is the same and it's the same engine, then I can't see why the 318d won't be able to push the same power as the 320d... What's the standard BMW warranty on engine failure? if it's 3 years or 60k, then I've passed that already, so I'm gonna re-map mine. I still need to know the differences, if any... anyone??? Cheers |

Same bore and stroke, so as per Xenon's comments, mapping, boost and so on.

there you go, so more than just a map, i would expect then the 318d injectors to
be pants and maxed out even with just a re-map!

Xenon - do you work for BMW? Your knowledge of them is quite astonishing! While I tend to immerse myself in car geekery when I get a new one, I have never reached your level!

Well I verge on Asperger's Syndrome with my general car knowledge (so mates and relatives tell me) but tend not to get too immersed in the mechanics of cars - just what model does what, bhp of pretty much any car post 1980s, how much they are worth, help mates source cars, etc. So a beginner really!

Go on then - without Googling (be honest) what's the power of my 1990 944S2?

I'm going to have to slightly guess here - 177bhp?
Actually that's (roughly) for the 924 turbo. 3 litre engine and the turbo was 250bhp so more like a whisker over 200? |

There was never a 3.0 turbo. All the turbos were 8v 2.5s, the earlier were 220bhp and the later were 250bhp. All 2.5 though.

All 944s are wide-arched. As I said earlier, the 8v Lux is 2.5 litre, 163 bhp. Not particularly fast but handles beautifully.

Xenon - I thought the N/A S2 was 3 litre and the turbo was 2.5? I may be wrong though. In fact I probably am.
