320d Fuel Efficiency (What's yours do)
I have owned an 'Efficient Dynamics' 320d for a year now and my daily drive consists a 50 mile round trip which is approx 20% urban / 80% extra urban. Now BMW quote mpg figures of 58.9 combined, however my car is averaging 48 mpg and I dont have a heavy right foot!! I thought it was just my car, but I have had a few loaners over the past 12 months and similar figures are being reported by the onboard computer.
So where are BMW getting a figure of 58.9 mpg from? is this a fairy tale? I recently also had a 330d for a week and was easily able to achieve 43 mpg- so whats the story here? Audi quote mpg figures of 48.7 for its 170 2.0 A4 - IS it that case that the 320d isn't actually streets ahead in efficiency as its claimed to be and companies like Audi and Mercedes are simply quoting much more honest figures for every day drivers. - Would love to know what other 320d owners think. |

Unfortunately in my experience BMW's 'claimed' mpg figures are often as optimistic as some other manufacturers 0-62 times etc.
They all seem to 'flower' certain aspects of the cars they produce. Also I'm not 100% sure of this, but I believe that the mpg figures are often gained from cars that are sitting on a rolling road in a wind tunnel, if the case then hardly an accurate reflection of how the car will be driven on different road surfaces. Incorrect tyre pressures can effect fuel economy but not that much! |

BMW's economy figures are straight from Enid Blyton, everyone knows that.
waits now for some anal retentive to say he matches or exceeds BMW's figures....

Just because you don't have a heavy right foot, doesn't mean that you drive more efficiently. My wife and I both use our car, she consistently gets 5 or 6 MPG less than me, she drives with a light right foot I would say, but uses more fuel.
Have no idea how you drive, but things like anticipating stopping without braking at roundabouts for example will save you fuel. Try some different driving styles and see what happens. |

Well I'm struggling to get above 35mpg for a car that's supposed to do 45ish.
Do I care? No. |

On the daily commute etc I see 38mpg if I drive sensibly .
On a 70 mph(ish) run on the motorway I get 48mpg easily, especially if I don't get snarled up in traffic . I once did the trip from home to my parents (Halifax to Doncaster, so mostly motorway) at a very steady 65mph and got 70mpg . However, I'd rather use more fuel than be bored to death at those speeds and be constantly tangling with HGVs in the slow lane!

I've averaged 39mpg over 10,000 miles, 80% town driving / 20% motorway so I'm happy with that. However, I recently did a 400 mile round trip, mainly doing doing between 70 and 75mph - average mpg for the trip was a staggering 56.9mpg :-) , so is BMW's combined cycle based on something similar?

My 320D has just about got to 5K on the clock. On a daily commute which is about 2Miles to M3 then M3/M25/A40 to Hangar Lane I average 54MPG on a good run.
If I get stuck in traffic it usually drops to around 49MPG and I do seem to suffer from lead foot sindrome. This is on a non remapped version. On number of occassions while on motorway only driving I've seen 64MPG over long distances of cruising at 70mpg

I've 45kmls, and averaged 50mpg up to 2 weeks ago. Drive mostly motorways at 85 mph.
Now I have the evolve map, and see quite an improvement looks like 55 mpg or better with regular use of the additional power.. With that fuel my remap will be paid for in two years! |
