19" 225 alloys 9" wide on front ??
New to here ...... so hello everyone. Currently have a 325i M Sport Touring but from next weekend will be driving a 335D SE Coupe. Car I am buying has 18" wheels and I want to upgrade to 19" and probably the 225 wheel. Have looked at various options of either genuine or replicas and someone has offered me a set of genuine 225 but they are all the 9" wide wheel rather than 8" front and 9" rear. Tyres will be 235 front and 255 rear as standard. Would this cause any issues, I guess offsets might be a problem. Person selling them seems knowledgable but thought I should ask here. Thanks
Also ...... anyone with 225 wheels to sell i would like to hear from you. Or if anyone wants an immaculate 325i M Sport Touring, 2006, 28k miles, let me know too please. |

You will have 15mm LESS clearance on the strut side, and the outside edge of the wheel will EXTEND an extra 11mm |

Get the proper 225s for the front and keep the 9" wheels as spares for when the ones on the car crack. As they will.

Go with the regular setup. 9 wide for front is to much in my opinion. As to offsets you can you the wheels and tires section calculator to see if the new et's will extend or retract your wheels. However, if you find an OEM set of 225's you don't have what to worry about.
Here's an example: http://www.salesafter.de/product_details.php?id=558 |

I have read a little about cracking on 225 wheels, is this a major problem? Why do they crack?
Would replicas be less prone to cracking therefore may be the better bet. |

see here:
http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=190162 It's a huge problem if you're and innocent customer, no problem at all for BMW who refuse to acknowledge there is a problem. Replicas might well be heavier but probably a much better bet than the OEM ones. Beautiful looking wheel but not suited to British roads.

So where is the best place to shop for the 230s if they are a better wheel.
Also quite like the look of M6 replica wheels, anyone know of any known issues with them? |

230's have the same problem. I have had 2 sets go on me. Don't climb curbs. Try to avoid pot holes. Don'e even remember hitting anything major. But still managed to crack.

mine cracked and i never hit a pot hole - the best looking rims IMO are 225s but such a shame that they all crack, i reckon if anyone out there hasn't had a set that have cracked as of yet...they eventually will, I would buy a set and have the inner rim strengthened some how and change from RFT to non RFTS, the crack on my wheel just put me off the wheels straight up, ended up selling the set for £400 with the cracked wheel welded professionally...what a waste

My 225Ms have not cracked yet and I wince every time I run over a pebble. I'm expecting that they will crack sooner or later and I'll get the same brush off from my dealer. I will take legal action as Crackerjack did successfully.

I have read a lot now about the cracking of 225 and also the 230 wheels, sounds quite scary. So what to do now ....
I had nearly decided to buy replica 225 wheels and put on non runflats but have recently found a set of genuine 225 which have been refurbed and the person selling them says the rears were cracked and this was the reason for the refurb. As I would not be able to view before buying due to distance is this too big a risk. He is to send me pics, should any cracks be obvious or should it be reasonable to assume a decent refurb job has removed all the problems. Other option would be to buy a completely different style of wheel but cant really see any options at the moment that I fancy, any suggestions. Do quite like the original look of the 225s but maybe that could be over-riden by something else that looks good. Had considered M6 replicas but they seem to have a problem with laquer coming off so don't want that hassle. |

The lack of give on the rft is a major cause of the rims cracking. I never heard of any 18" rims cracking on the E46 which came with 'normal' tyres.
As to replicas. Be careful, there are some very poor quality and heavy wheels out there. Far better buying OEM, BBS or OZ. Other makes that have good reviews are ACS (expensive), GPower and Linea Corse (made by Jota). Lots of info on the site by using the search function. |

My preference would be to buy genuine 225 and fit non runflat tyres. Problem is getting decent second hand ones and new ones are prohibitively dear.
