Top Gear - Cool Wall

Anyone see Top Gear last night (UK) - Jeremy couldn't even be bothered to put the E90 onto the cool wall. Instead it ended up lying on the floor...

Quotes of "it's just 15' of car"...

Jeremy really isn't a fan of BMWs. Sometimes I think he does it on purpose...His review on the M5 was terrible...he didn't know the volume button from the seek button on the steering controls. I can self-cancel the E60 signal once I've pushed. I've heard that at one point, BMW refused to give him Press demo cars because his reviews were so negative against BMWs. But I still love watching him...he's brutally honest and he funny.

Yeah - he really doesn't like BMWs does he? I noticed the Volume/Seek thing with the M5 as well.

He always looks for something to better a BMW with, which means that even he must think a BMW is the best - even though he (seems to) hate them!

But he is great to watch/read - he's just sooo un-PC!

Jeremy is so inconsistent. A few weeks ago, he said how good the 3 series is. Top Gear is now really an entertainment show, mainly showing sports car that most people will never own. I think there is an opportunity for the BBC to show a different car show as well, focused on reviewing the type of cars that most people actually buy, with a more consistent approach across brands.

I actually like Jeremy not liking the 3 series, when you see the car he actually bought himself......

Their so called cool wall is a bunch of c**p

All it is is what cars Clarkson likes or doesnt, and he has always been biased against BMW, except maybe for the handeling of the M5 after he drove it

I'm new to Top Gear but the bits I've seen have shown me that it's a good entertainment show with VERY subjective and inconsistent judgments. The footage and the way they drive the cars is also very good!

Folks, the cool wall is about whether or not cars are cool. Its not about their performance, reliability, handling, fuel economy or other such normal means of determining a cars ability. And the reality is that in Britain today, the 3 series saloon is no longer cool. It is no longer something exclusive to aspire to. It outsells the Ford Mondeo and Vauxhall vectra which were long the repmobiles of choice. Now when they reviewed it, from all the other perspectives I have listed above, they said it was class leading and the best car out there. In the magazine they say that to choose another car in this class is making a wilful branding decision, because you are choosing an inferior car. But this does not necessarily make it cool.

And lets face it, the styling is either love it or....well, I can't say hate it because its very inoffensive. Its just rather bland. This is why ultimately I chose to buy a used E46 M3, and wait for its successor rather than buy the E90. The clincher was touring our local dealer when I brought the wife, and she thought it looked boring. In fact, she commented how the rear end looked identical to my mate Peter's car, a nissan Primera. She couldnt believe I was thinking of trading in my E46 coupe for it.

And to be fair to Clarkson, and I am someone who has seen practically every episode of Top Gear and have ever edition of the mag; his reputation as a BMW hater is a bit overblown; he has always praised the technical abilities of BMW's but has been put off by their styling/image.

In relation to the M5, you need to understand his reviews are meant to be entertaining so he will often harp on about something for ages (i.e the iDrive which I personally agree with btw; I hate it) only to turn on a dime at the end.

In fact, he has said something to the effect that when he reviewed the Ferrari F430, he thought that was automotive perfection; that nothing would come along to better it, but now it had. Heady praise indeed.

Great entertainment, I agree. However, I wouldn't go to them for an honest review.

I love the show and being a Brit, get most of the jokes Clarkeson is a pompous ass but he is entertaining and definitely not PC. He constantly mocks the German accent when reviewing BMW, Mercs and Porsches.

I also love the way they mock the Vette because of its leaf springs. i think he said something like "Technology last seen on Queen Victoria's Carriage" or something like that. He's a hoot.

Is it on TV here? I couldn't find it on Speed or BBC America. Luckily you can find a ton of clips on Google Video ( video.google.com ) which is how I keep up with it.

One more thing, the guy can drive!

Also, Nexus, did 'The Stig' get to take the E90 around the track? What time did he get? I was amused BTW that 'The Stig' has his own entry on Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Stig

i agree 100% ^. i saw a few of his reviews, not just of BMWs, and i disagreed with almost 50% of the stuff he said. i think his very first impression of a car makes for his entire review. if there is one thing he doesn't like, he finds everything else about the car horrible.

Interesting perspective and right on as to the cool wall statement-boy the standard of life in the UK is higher than here that's for sure; we certainly do not have all salesreps prancing around in BMWs in Canada.

As for the successor to the M3, I am afraid it will not look radically different from what you see already in the e90. So if you find it bland, you won't be blown over by the new M3...

He puts his very own Ford GT into the seriously uncool section. For that, he is the funniest and down to earth guy in the world

Top Gear's a very entertaining car show, and you should leave it at that, it's somewhat informative, but mostly it's about entertainment. So what if the E90's not on the wall, who gives a flying f**k?? it's your car, as long as you think it's cool and you like driving it, don't give a f**k what others think

What you have to remeber is that 90% of uk sales reps will have company cars, the company car being part of their salary and the company's wanting cars that will hold their value better, mind you I know a lot of reps driving around in a lot less 'prestige' motors!! The main reason the 3 out sells the mondeo now is because a lot of people have down sized as well as gone up market...

He's an idiot and should not be taken seriously. His review of the M5 was rubbish, he spent more time complaining about i-drive and the indicators. Tiff Needell did a far better one, in fact Tiff is a hundred times better than Clarkson.

It's just sad that many people believe whatever he says , when he himself can't make up his mind .

I was watching a clip the other day where he claimed the Nissan 350Z has a french engine - everybody knows it has a Nissan VQ series engine which the French borrowed for the Vel Satis. He makes so many errors like this I don't even watch him anymore.
