C63 envy...

I have had 3 series coupes since ive been 18, and have never really wanted any other car. I recently purchased a 335i after driving an S4, C63, M3, cayman, and IS-F. I figured id test drive a wide swath of cars. I realize the 335i is in a different price class as most of these other cars, but its performance really is not far from most of them as you know. Given this fact, and the state of the economy, i thought it to be wise to save 15-20k on my car purchase and use that money to invest......welll i partially regret that decision now. Every day i look forward to driving my 335, but every day i see and hear a C63 i cant help but wish i got it instead. I drove it for a good 20 mins on the test drive, and it really is an absolute monster. The exhaust note alone when starting it up and revving it is one of the most intimidating, awesome sounds i have ever heard. Anyway, i MAY be working a deal with my local benz dealer if and when i decide to sell my 335 w/ only 8k miles. I think it will go fast with such low miles, cpo warranty, and basically every option available including 19'' 230's. I will most likely hang on to it for another few weeks to make sure i think it through. Anyone else buy their 335 and see one other car in particular they wish they would have gotten instead that was within there means....thanks in advance for the replies,

I miss the handling of a Porsche, but I don't miss anything from MBenz

I loved all of my Mercedes, the S420, C230, C32, but I am more than happy with the 335i

The power, the convertible, i love it all.
I just really miss the handling that my Boxster and 996 provided

I love the C63, but I just (personally) don't want a sedan at this time...
I too was looking at a C63 and M3, but decided to go with a convertible and I don't regret it

The c63 is really just raw power that a 335i can't compete with
But, it is a good 10k more than the e90/92 (though same price range as the e93)

If you keep regretting not getting it, then get it.
That's the only thing you can do

In a way I can see where you're coming from. They are two different cars though, completely. I am personally a bag fan of the power a raw V8 puts out, but they are way out of my price range. If you decide to do it, I say all the power to you and enjoy, the C63 is a monster

Have you driven an M3? This post makes it look like you've never set foot in the car.

I have driven an e90 M3 6MT and an e92 M3 DCT

Very fast, no question.

Unfortunately though, I have not had a chance to take any through the twisties

But, in a straight, they're quick, but they're lack or torque compared to a C63, or a fully moded 335i, is a disadvantage no?

I've seen people on this forum with dynos pushing upwards to 450 hp and torque on their 335s... that... is quick don't you agree?

The 335 is very heavy in the corners compared to the e46 M3 (which I have had a chance to drive through the twisties numerous times), and I'm sure not as nimble as the e9X m3
But with a good set of coils, sways, and such, I don't see why it couldn't compete.

Wasn't there a video of a Dinan 335 vs a m3?
and it was very close? I forgot the outcome though
But we all know that Dinan mods are overpriced nonetheless :P (though great great products)

I really want to take an e9X M3 through the twisties now lol

He said a 335. Not a modded 335. Performance is not just straight line speed! It's a joke putting the 335 in the same class as the c63 or the m3.

this is apples and oranges, you just gotta pick your $ amount you want to spend, and where the money comes from and what kind of monthly payment you want.

if you can afford the c63 w/out the extra costs affecting your current lifestyle, then go for it. It's easier to downgrade than it is to upgrade in the future. As for myself, I do not regret getting the 335 compared to other similar priced cars. I do regret the color though. haha

Which is why I mentioned coils and other suspension work :P

And I know he didn't say a modded 335, but I was just referring to the car's potential

From what I've read, in order to mod a M3, you'll be spending quite a deal more than you would imagine when comparing it to a 335i or other cars

Like the other guy said: if your lifestyle doesn't drastically change (well, you might need to have a few less starbucks but you know what i mean), then do it

So I was right, you really haven't driven an M3.

The 335i's peak torque band is basically 1500rpm-5000rpm, to the average layman driver that's of course going to make it "feel faster" because you're getting so much of your torque in the mid-range.

The M3 on the other hand is still picking up until 8300rpm. The car was meant to be driven in the high RPM range. That however takes skill to manage your gears, speed, and line on a real twisty road.

Of course, this would be uncomfortable for guys who drive around in 4,000lbs drop tops, and just want to take a whirl around town. So I understand why you think the M3 is slow and lacks torque.

But to any driver who has taken at least a few performance driving courses, the M3 would run circles around the 335i, modded or not.

It's not a totally fair comparison, as the C63 is really closer to the M3 in terms of money, power, etc.

I'm just coming to the end of my lease on my E63 that I've had for 2.5 years. Business is slow, so I'm going down a ways on the budget. I considered the C63, but have pretty much decided to get an E92 335i M Sport, after driving it. I've had two AMGs and an RS4 since my last Bimmer, so for me it's partly about something different, and getting back into a BMW this time around. The AMG is a beast, and I've really enjoyed it, but trying to leave out the money difference, there are a few comparisons I'll make from a driver perspective. Keep in mind I'm comparing the E63 to the 335, I haven't driven the C63, but I have driven a C350.

1. The AMG motor is phenomenal. Everything you said, power, sound, has it all.
2. The MB feels stiffer and more "planted", suspension is more sophisticated in the sense that it is smooth over the rough stuff, but stands great in the twisties. That said, it doesn't have the organic feel of the Bimmer, that feel for the surface, and is not as purely fun to drive. Even though I was testing a $40k cheaper car (the 335), there was a certain thrill to driving it that the AMG just doesn't have (I also had a CLK55).
3. The 335i is just a gorgeous car, both the M Sport E92 and the LCI E90. The Mercedes is very handsome, too, but I don't think it's the timeless beauty that the 335 is. I think that years down the road, car nuts will still look back on this car as a classic (especially the coupe).
4. I will tell you that I had a tremendous amount of mechanical trouble with my E63, to the tune of $30k in work over 2.5 years. Thankfully it was all warranted. Didn't have too much trouble with my CLK55, so either I just had a lemon, or MB has slipped. My overall sense is that BMW is generally a better made car from this standpoint.

Just my two cents from experience. I will say that getting something new and different is a huge consideration. I've never had the same car two times in a row. From that standpoint, the Benz makes a ton of sense. And it is a very bad ass car, and very unusual to see around (at least here).
