Door opened while driving

I did european delivery on my 325i. I was in Salzburg area and going back to Munich. After a mini stop, I started driving back and all of sudden I hear this alarm, same as when you leave the key after turning off the engine. I can also hear the wind noise as if it is creeping in from some tiny area. On the dashboard control, I saw the open door light came on all of sudden. So I had to stop the car on the shoulder, get out and close the back door. That was a little bit worrysome then. I was little freaked out. I couldnt repeat it afterwards.

Now the car will be here in couple of weeks. I am sure dealer would have no idea of resolving this and I dont know how to do it again. What do you guys think have happened? If the door was opened before starting I would have known coz of the alarm thing but it just happened during the drive. I drove a lot afterwards and even faster.

This recently happened to an E60 owner, also in Europe:

I wonder if there's a common denominator?

Could be the door wasnt totally closed, but closed enought for the system to think it was, untill you started driving away

Have seen it happen before on other cars, especially when people are scared of banging the door closed, so they just push it closed softly , and that not enough to latch it properly

I've had this happen twice with the trunk. I thought it was my imagination and that I hadn't closed the trunk properly. I didn't really believe that but the alternative explanation (the trunk pops open by itself) was too bizzare to believe either. Hasn't happened again since.

I thought that the door open indicators only come on after you drive the car, they don't show if the doors are open and you at a standstill.

Sounds like the door wasn't closed all the way to begin with?

I wonder if maybe the latch was stuck in the open position or something and the door was closed but not latched...

The doors require a firm push/pull to close, to achieve that solid "chunk" sound when fully closed. Might be that didn't happen.

the pivot point of the door handle is not right for the rear doors, you have do put a disproportionate amount of pull on the doors to close them.

I think its probably the latch. I do remember closing the door firmly. I will have the dealer look at it.
