Is there sand, mud, etc. on the front wheels? Is the tyre pressure the same on both tyres? Are the wheels accurately in place? Usually the reason in one of these. Once I had a car that had the front wheels balanced poorly and that really shaked the steering wheel.

Make sure your tire pressure is at the proper levels for all four tires. If you
still encounter the shaking, have your dealer rebalance the tires.

Front wheel shake

I have had three sets of tires on my car, ( sport package, bridgestone), the final set, finaly fixed the steering wheel shake. I still feel the entire car has a little shake to it, it may be the rear tires or the sport suspension. I did have a factory rep look at the car. He stated there was something wrong, they came to the conclusion it was the tires. I am assuming they kept pulling the tires from the same lot. Maybe the new ones were from a different lot. But only the fronts were changed on this last set. At least the sterring wheel isn't shaking anymore.

I just tested a G35 coupe, to see if I wanted to get out of my BMW, I would rather drive with 3 wheels in BMW, than the Infinity. All infinity drivers say it is not worth the extra money for a BMW. That is a understatment.

What is everybody elses thoughts.

My car was at the dealer for 5 days while they tried to fix an alignment pull and a shimmy in the steering wheel. They ended up putting on new tires and rims and aligning the car with new specs from BMW. The alignment is great now but there is still a very slight shimmy in the wheel. It is only at certain speeds and on certain road surfaces. The dealer knows this and said to bring the car back in about 1000 miles so they can rebalance the tires. My SA said the suspension is a little stiff now and needs to be broken in a bit first.

Pressure is correct on all four corners and I guess I gotta have the dealer take a look at it. However, the shake is only in between 40-50 mph range.

It must be the tires!

That certainly sounds like a tyre problem. Usually when the tyres are poorly balanced they shake at a certain speed. Have the tyres rebalanced by the dealer.

Well, The BMW technician has confirmed that all E90 series has a shimmy problem. Engineers in germany are working on this issue. At this point no dealer really as a clue to fix this problem.

Hope that information helps.

haha.

My car did shake for a little while, but I haven't checked the tyre pressure or anything. It's seemed to go away for now.
I had the same problem on my E46. It's usually a balancing problem...

I heard it straight from the horses mouth, BMW America Technical representative, that all E-90 series has a shimmy problem. The engg in Germany are working on it. They do not know why it is caused. I do not know how the dealer or the techincal guy could say that there is no safety issue with it. well in my mind if you do not know what causes it, how can you say there is no safety issue with it.

My car is still sitting at the dealer, I am not going to pick it up until they fix it. I am not comfortable driving a faulty car period.

This duplicates my experience. I test drove an E90 330i: wheel shake at 50mph. My ED 330i: wheel shake at 50mph. BTW, at 100mph, it's solid as a rock.

Rocky,

I don't doubt your source, but I've heard the opposite. A BMW Field Service Engineer by the name of Charles visted me two weeks ago to look at my soft-stop problem and also the shimmy. He said that the shimmy is not a wide-spread problem, but limited to individual cars. He offered no solution, but instead wrote in his report back to BMWNA that the car was functioning normally and no apparent safety issues.

I'm also very shocked at the way BMWNA has handled potential safety issues. With the soft-stop, I'm very worried that the slip after a stop may cause the car to lurch into the car infront of me, or even worse, his a pedestrian after coming to a stop at a crosswalk. The FSR's method of giving the car a seal of safety was to compare other E90s and just saying, they all do it, so it's nothing to be alarmed about. Not very safe or responsible in my mind.

Would somebody please explain why my E90 does NOT have a shimmy if all E90's have it?

Have I been ripped off or shortchanged?

I have tried smooth roads and rough, and speeds up to 90 mph and I can't find it!

PS I missed out on the lurch and the hesitation too

Chris,
It seems like, the BMW field service engineers themself do not have any idea as the car is so new. The problems are new.

I drove a friends car who also bought it with me. He thought his car did not have a shimmy, when I drove it, it was there. I think many people cannot notice it as it is so hard to miss it. I would suggest people to drive between 40-50mph and keep their hand loose on the wheel and notice their hand shake a little.

Make sure the road is smooth and straight, that way you can hold the sterring lighly.

It is certain though that many cars has this issue if not all.

How badly does your car shimmy??

Mine seems to have a very slight shimmy. But, no way is it so severe or consistent that I would term it a safety problem or not drive it. Actually thought it was the road, and still am not convinced that it isn't since it occurs inconsistently.
