Strange Question about Manual Tranny on e90
From my understanding there is a mechanism in the E90 that prevents rolling back when starting in 1st gear.
As strange as it may sound, I actually love the rolling back and forth with manual trannies at stop lights and when starting off. How effective is the mechanism...does it completely prevent rolling or only minimally? How does the clutch feel? |

The hill assist or hill start system prevents manual tramsmission cars from rolling backwards AND forwards (depending on the position of the car on the hill of course). This lasts about 1.5 to 2 seconds, enogh time for the driver to release the brake pedal, press the go pedal and lift off the clutch pedal to make the car go again without risk of possibly hitting something or someone if co-ordination was a little slow or if object(s) was too close etc.
The car literally holds on to the brakes for this time. By rolling ther car back & forth, don't you risk wearing the clutch out quicker than one would normally do if you didn't roll around? Anyway, I have the wonderful Steptronic (sorry manual die hards) and of course there is no need for hill assist.

It only activates when you take your foot off the brake while the clutch pedal is in. Once you start to let off the clutch pedal, the brakes release and do not reactivate unless you press the clutch pedal back in and stop with the brakes. When it does activate, it lasts a few seconds, I tested it out on my driveway.

On a steep enough hill, this isn't a bad feature to have on the Step either.

As soon as you start to release the clutch or start to depress the throttle, it releases... i still do the rolling/clutch hold while impatiently waiting for traffic lights.
