question regarding OEM roof rack installation, is there supposed to be a gap?
i bought an OEM BMW roof rack for my E90 and upon installation it seems that there's a gap of about .5cm between the actual rack and the roof but i guess this is intended otherwise they'd rub against the paint.
i looked at the manual and there seems to be parts missing, namely a rubber guard and an adhesive type thing that are to be placed between the rack and the car. however as i'm looking at other pics of racks in the forums, they all seem to be having this gap. to those with racks, did you just pop the small flaps up, tossed the rack on and screwed them in and voila? |

yeah i got it to sit tight and flushed, i was thinking the rubber guard/adhesive would help prevent vibration. that reminds me i'm going to take a drive now and see if there is any vibration. my coworker has a yakima rack and it sounds like an airplane so she says lol

the black plastic covers (with BMW logo) aren't suppose to touch the car; only the metal brackets make contact with the roof slots secured with 4 little bolts.
No glue required. And da.. you'll get used to the extra noise after a month or so. |

just did a short drive, no vibration at 70mph!
so quick question, if i have two boards, i'll have to put them on with the bottom of each board touching the other? anyone worried that might wear out the wax? i guess it could've be worse than the board taking stray rocks on the slopes |

Just in case anyone else bought a oem base rack second hand like I did, and needs the gutter protectors, you can get them from your local dealer.
The part # is: 82790392010 The price here at east bay bmw in pleasanton, ca is $9.14 for (4) gutter protectors.

As for the base rack, the little gap is intended - my setup is exactly the same. Also, expect some whistling noise caused by the rack and holders. After I intalled them, I notice a 2mpg decrease in miliage due to the wing resistance. Have fun on slopes))

If you have noise, get the fairing (sp?). Worth every penny. Better looking, you can put dumbass stickers on it without destroying your paint, and it's MUCH quieter.
