Questions about starting my car and my exhaust fumes. Kindly help me!

Hi guys

I've also posted this on another forum, so please excuse the duplicate thread if you see it elsewhere. I have a 2009 323i (in Canada), pretty much brand new still (7000km or 4400 miles).

I have 2 observations that I was hoping to get some insight on:

1. Starting my car - I notice that as soon as I start my car, especially after it's been off for some time, the car seems to give itself gas in spurts. It feels like for the first 10 or 20 seconds, the car is lightly trying to accelerate past the normal idle speed. This happens regardless of whether it's warm or cold outside. Is this normal?

2. Excess exhaust fumes - Whenever I'm sitting at a traffic light, I look around and notice that my car's fumes are always slightly more visible. There is no bad smell or anything else that looks strange. It just seems like my fumes are more visible. Is this normal?

I noticed these issues when I first picked up my car from the dealership. I drive normal, I use Sunoco 94 gas. There is nothing else that seems wrong with the car. Thank you so much for any input you can give on this matter.

same here, when i start my car in the morning, fumes are really visible compared to other cars, but i think as long as there is no smell, it's all good

Your idle speed will not stabilize until the car warms up. Also, the car will run rich when it is warming up, so exhaust actually will smell a little different, even if you aren't noticing it. Seeing more exhaust gasses when all the parts are still warming up is completely normal.
