N54 engine question

Just a couple of questions

Does the n54 have a valve management arraignment? like the n52?

Are the camshafts connected straight from main shaft via chains?

Is their a system the controls the length of the valves opening from idle to full throttle?

I believe so. If thats the system that controls valve lift, then, yes.

VANOS adjusts valve advance (timing), not lift

N52 also has Valvetronic, which adjusts valve lift in lieu of the traditional throttle plate (used only during "limp home" mode)

http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=38856

Now what I'd like explained, is that the N54's lack of Valvetronic was spun at the time as its' being unnecessary on a forced induction motor. Now they've gone and slapped it onto the N55. If the point of switching to a single twin-scroll turbo was reduced cost and complexity, it seems to me as if Valvetronic adds it right back in the name of incrementally better fuel consumption, and thus of course emissions.
