UUC Evo3 SSK (Short Shifter) Installed
UUC Evo3 SSK (Short Shifter) Installed
I just got finished installing the UUC Evo3 in my M3, I had almost forgotten how much better the UUC SSK was in my 335 and we have had the M3 for a few months. I have gone with UUC in all of my cars due to the all metal construction and my experience with their shifters in other cars has been great. I did not elect to purchase/install the DSSR and did not find any play in the OE one during the course of my installation. I also elected to NOT drop the exhaust and lower cover plates/heat shields as I was installing the shifter in my garage with the car on jack stands. If you have a lift (one day I will) the UUC instructions may work better. I just bent the heat shield for access and carefully bent it back when I was finished. Going this route the shifter pivot height adapter had to be installed in the carrier in the car, but it was no more difficult than the past three UUC shifters I have installed. After a quick drive, the ROI is quickly realized- The shifter is much more solid in operation and a bit shorter. My DIY write-up is here: http://www.billswebspace.com/M3UUCEvo3DIY.htm

Good write up! Couple of comments:
In the one pic, and maybe it is a point of reference issue, it looks like the shifter is in backwards. If you run your hand down the front of the shifter, the bend should carry your hand towards the dashboard. It seems like this is what you are saying above the picture, but it looks like it is oriented in the opposite direction in the pic. EDIT - remove the comment about the locking nut - saw you mentioned that! |

Good catch, this pic was taken before the shifter was connected, I'll have to get a new pic up

Cool! Glad I could help! Had there been a nice DIY like this I might have done mine myself vs. having my shop do it. Dropping the exhaust and everything is a huge pain on jackstands!

Corrected, I think I just forgot that I had taken that pic so that it was easy to see the circlip installed and forgot to add in the one with the correct shifter orientation. Thanks again for the catch, that could have mislead some people :-)

Now thanks to you, SSK vendors are probably going to sell a lot more kits . Your creative method makes that mod a lot more appealing to some (I'm happy with my stock shifter and ZHP knob). Good job man .

Your site led me to know about this mod (and a few others that I already have done myself) and just now led to me ordering the UUC SSK as well as the DSSR. I always felt the stock shifter was a weak point in an other wise amazing car. The indirect gear changes between 1-1 & 2-3 as well as slop when in a gear has left me wanting more. I'm convinced these mods will really clean up the gear changes and make driving the car even more pleasurable than it already is. Thanks for the recommendation! |
