It's the steering lock... it's a common problem which part of the steering column needs to be replaced. The new part doesn't have the steering lock in it. Hope you still have warranty.

oh man...been there. 06 models had this feature but it failed a lot and they eventually got rid of it. happened to my car, they had to replace a part in the steering column under warranty. hopefully yours still is. or if not hopefully they will make an exception on repairing it because it's nothing you could have caused.

Agreed with the above. But to be clear, although the electronic lock failed a lot, that's not why BMW stopped making them. Until mid-2007, German regulations required that all new cars and motorcycles capable of 25 kph required this sort of anti-theft device. When the regulations went away, so did the steering wheel locks.

I've seen this on my 06 two times in the past year, but there seems to be nothing wrong with the car.

It happened once or twice to my car, but the local BMW center did not replace any parts. BMW NA now recommends a SW update.

My dad had this happen on his 2008 E92 - a software update at the dealer cured it. Worst case you would have to have the steering column replaced like some other members on here.

The steering column lock is still in operation after software update on my car (330xi). My car developed a locking problem, had the software installed (presumably the patch you've mentioned), a finally it was found that the problem was caused by an intermittent fault in one of the CA fobs. So now I have a new fob, the software patch, no locking problems, but from time to time I still hear the locking mechanism making clicking noises.

hrmm....my car appears to still have the lock. I hope it doesn't become a problem after warranty.

Since it is a yellow warning sign, the steering wheel lock jammed, no need to bring it to a dealer, just restart/etc.
