Got my winter wheel & tire package :) *updated with new pics*

Hi all, just thought I'd post some pics of the pre-mounted winter wheels & tires that I had ordered from 1010Tires.com in BC. I realize it's not on the car yet but they're just so darn clean that I had to take some shots incase anyone else is considering these for whatever application. I'd have to thank Buckman and EvEr35 as they posted photos of the same setup on their cars from last winter which gave me the confidence to pick these.

They are 225/45/17 91H Dunlop Winter Sport M3 DSST tires on 17x8" ET38 M5 replicas in hyper silver with what seems like a gunmetal interior colour. The latter should help conceal the brake dust that will eventually end up there. The BMW roundel center caps were included with the price of each rim, infact I didn't even have to ask for them. They also came with a set of 20 chrome lugbolts which according to the invoice are '12x1.5 Acron Wheel Bolt 0.91" (23mm) Length Chrome (Excalibur)'.

Not yet, still a bit mild outside. I'll update this thread as soon as they do go on though.

For a general idea you can see them here, same brand replicas with the same tires:

I used to use Pirelli Scorpion Ice & Snow tires on my QX4, and Pirelli Scorpion Zero's in the summer. Really great tires.

Any idea how heavy the rims are? Or, how much the rim/tire combo weighs? The rims look nice, and if they are light enough I might go with them for summer rubber and use the 16" type 156 for the winters. Thanks.

Edit: Just checked TR's website and the tires are 26 lbs.

bah, knew I forgot something...

My 159's felt a lot heavier than the ASA JH3's wheels going on, and I was planning on weighing each one... forgot though.

Oh well, maybe after the winter when I switch back.

Well, the shipping labels indicate that each balanced wheel and tire is 55lb. According to TireRack (like you said) a Dunlop Winter Sport M3 DSST in 225/45/17 is 26lb, so that means the rim itself is more or less 29lb.

BUT, UPS charges in dimensional weight too so it may be lighter than that. I do remember reading someplace that this 17" R89 replica rim is somewhere around the 24lb range.

What I'll do tomorrow is put one of these on a scale, subtract the 26lb tire and let you know the balance.

Ok I just weighed one of them on a digital scale. The total mounted and balanced weight with center cap & valve stem is 49.4lb.

The RFT tire being 26lb leaves the rim itself at 23.4lb, that's pretty darn good for a replica 17" rim that only costs CDN$179.99 if you ask me.

So you could go with 225/45/17 all-around for the summer if you want on those rims, or stagger it at the back with 255/40/17. From what I see on TireRack, the Bridgestone summer RFT's need a minimum 8.5" rim for a 255 but the Pirelli Eufori@ can handle down to an 8" which would be fine.

Personally I'd go with the all-season Continental tires at 225/45/17 on all four corners which would give you a 400 treadwear rating as opposed to 140-180 for the summer tires. And then you could also squeeze a little more use out of these rims throughout the year and not have a heart attack on the first day of snow as opposed to changing early or worrying about driving on the summer's.

Thanks Greg! 23lbs isn't bad. The 156s are 25lbs each for a 16" rim.

Hello all. It's a miserable, rainy, cold night here in the GTA so I thought I'd go and install my winter wheel & tire set. I took some photos in my garage but given the circumstances they are far from ideal, just thought some of you might like to see what they look like on the car incase anyone is considering a set.

Edit: FYI Those are water spots on the wheels, not imperfections in the paint.

Edit edit: Turns out the Style 158 17x8" wheels that come on the 330xi Sport are made by BBS, just noticed today when I was cleaning the insides.

Looks nice, I almost ordered that exact combo, but none of the canadian companies would guarantee fitment on my coupe as they had never seen one yet! Only tirerack guarenteed the fitment of the ASA JH3s so I went with those instead and the same Dunlop M3 DSSts!

Ok... I can assure you they don't in RL, it's the tight angles I had to take the photos at.

Greg, Some Q's...

What torque setting did you use?
How are you storing your summer set?
Are you keeping track of the front/back placements?

I tightened them to 88.5 lb-ft, I came across the figure somewhere else on this board as the manual doesn't seem to state what it should be. Someone stated the European manuals show 120nm so I did the conversion and ended up with this figure.

I have stands which I bought from Canadian Tire, they're pretty much a pole with 4 legs on the bottom, and pegs which accomodate a plastic uh...ring I guess, so it's just a matter of removing the centercap, sliding the wheel over the top of the pole and letting the inner hub of the wheel rest on this plastic ring, nothing else comes into contact. 4 225/45/17 tires/rims will fit on a single stand but I have them set up as 2 & 2. They come with a cover to protect from dust which slips over the whole thing to the floor and seals with a velcro strip. The stands sell for about CDN$20 when they're on sale. So these just sit in my garage infront of the car.

Yes, I've always written which corner the tire came off of on the inside sidewall when removing them, I bought a special white crayon which is used to shade in whitewall tires if they start to fade, etc...

Thanks! According information given to Mindmoxie, the E90/92s are supposed to be torqued to 130 Nm. In any case, you should re-check the torque on each lug a day or so after the switch-over.

I tried to buy those stands but after going to three Canadian Tire stores, I gave up (did get a good deal on a hydraulic lift and pair of axle stands though).

Enjoy your wheels!
