Diesel freezing temperature?

Seen a news report earlier about a couple of petrol stations which were closed because the diesel had began to freeze in the under ground storage tanks on the forecourt!!! Think the reporter said it was about -12c.

Surely this cant be right? They manage in the rest of Europe when they get proper winter temps every year dont they?

There should be an additive put in by the retailer during the winter months to stop the diesel freezing. I used to work in a petrol station, the problem is more likely the pumps are frozen, which does happen.

Garage List
Around -10 but additives are added in the winter to make it even lower.

We’re not far off those temperatures then, the car was showing -11.5 the other day. I know that was accurate because we have a calibrated weather station work which verified it.

That's air temp, though. It's warmer underground.

No, but the original post was about diesel freezing in petrol stations, maybe you missed that?

Anyway, spotted this:

Ahhh yes I did, however I'd of thought it would be more likely to freeze car's fuel tank first before the underground one's.
