New Owner with questions - 2006 X3
Hi all - as a proud owner of a new to us 2006 X3, I have to say I am amazed by this SAV. I had been one of the nay-sayers in the past, but after driving it for a while, it's really feels like a wider 330 touring than any typical SUV out there.
I have a couple of questions that I couldn't find in the search: 1) I think this has DRLs as the Xeons seem to be on all the time. Is it possible to reset these to function as auto sensing lights instead? I'm not keen in running Xeons full time as they're pricy to replace. 2) It has the Sirius prep, but not Sirius radio. I'm guessing this means the sharkfin has the Sirius antenna already. Is it possible to tap into that antenna to connect to one of the removable Sirius receivers? I've looked at some online solutions for the Kenwood Sirus modules, but they clain they don't work with the BMW Business head units. I'm trying to not have to put a magnetic mount on the roof. Thanks in advance! Last edited by Wookie; 01-12-2010 at 09:54 AM.. Reason: change title to clarify there's a question inside. |

Congratulations on your new set of wheels. I have an '08 with the Xenon headlights with the DRLs activated and an aftermarket Sirius receiver.
1. On my '08 with Xenon lights, the daytime running lights illuminate the inboard (highbeam) position. I believe the DRLs use a halogen bulb rather than a Xenon bulb. I would think that the 06 models would be the same. You should be able to verify by looking at the replacement bulb for the DRL in your owner's manual. The DRLs are an option that can be disabled by a dealer. 2. I believe the Sirius pre-wire is only compatable with the OEM BMW Sirius receiver. Thus, the BMW antenna is only intented for the BMW receiver. I'm using an aftermarket Sirius receiver. Rather than placing the satellite antenna on the exterior of the car, I was able to place it on the dash in the far right corner of the front windshield. It is not very noticable. The wire is hiden by the A-pillar and the dash pad. I have a sticky pad underneath the antenna to hold it in place. The antenna is black, same as the dash pad. So, it does tend to blend in. The antenna wire is tucked between the dash and the A-pillar. This restricts all major movement. So, there is not a safety issue of antenna movement in the cabin. Good luck

yeah, the DRL's don't illuminate your Xenon bulbs. they use the middle lights at a low setting, so they don't blind on-coming drivers. check to make sure your Xenon's are set to automatic, and not "on", so they aren't always on. enabling/disabling the DRL is a dealer function, since we don't have control over it on our rudimentary on-board system.

Thanks. I'm not getting any illumination on the dash, but the lights are on when starting the car. The switch is set to the left position (supposidly the auto position) but it seems that they (the Xeons) are on all the time. how long should it take for them to shut off when pulling out of a garage?

in my 2007, it takes 5-10 seconds for the lights to turn off.
you have NO illumination on the dash? have you turned the nob up to illuminate the gauges?

I'll have to do some testing on the time to shut off.
I have dash lights, but I was referring to any type of DRL indicator on the dash that I've seen w/ other brands. |

Ok, it is set to automatic, and they do shut off after about 20 seconds. But they seem very sensitive to light levels - Bright Sun they're off, but any light clouds or flat light, and they turn on. Seems they're on more than off. Is the sensitivity adjustable?
