slow iDrive on the 335i and RTT question
Hi everyone,
I’ve been lurking around this forum for a while now reading up on the e92. I just picked up my 392 today and I am really happy with it. It’s fast, its fun, and turns very well… did I mention it’s fast? Anyways, I had a couple of questions I wanted to ask (and yes, I did do a search for the answers, but none of the replies seem to satisfy me). First, I saw some posting on the iDrive lag (not start up lag, but actual changing of the menus), and they seem to be about the e90s that needed some software upgrade. My e92, I assume, has the most recent upgrades but still is noticeably slow (about a 1-2 sec. lag between actually pushing the wheel and seeing the menu change. I don’t know if this is normal or not as I have no other beemer to compare it to. I do have however, access to the Mercedes S550 with their version of the iDrive. In my opinion, it is supremely better. Its waaaay faster (virtually no lag) and it’s the nav is hard drive based. So yeah, its pretty slow I'm my opinion...i just want to know if its is slow in my standards, or are other 392 owners finding it slow too. Second, the guy who explained the features for my car wasn’t very helpful in the area of the Real Time Traffic report thing (since it’s relatively new and he was learning too). If you enter in a destination and start guidance, the RTT thing tells you where there is traffic. My question is, what if you don’t enter in a destination? Sometimes I just like seeing the nav on while I'm driving. Can I get RTT feedback on the map at the same time? I know you can look up the freeway and it will tell you traffic areas, but I find this method pretty much useless. It’s better to see a graphical representation of traffic areas on a map. Thanks for all your future help. This is my first non SUV car….its going to be a blast! btw, here is what i got: 2007 335i Sparkling Graphite/Black Leather Premium Sport Nav, rear park sensor, heated seats, suris radio, low jack, and iPod dock (pretty much free with purchase!) P.S. Does anyone else thing its ridiculous that they “charge” for the floor mats? Every time the sales man brought that up while negotiating the price, I got pissed off. I told him, floor mats aren’t even an issue here. It’s free so stop bringing it up or ill walk. Anyways, long story short, everything is negotiable. I'm sure I didn’t get the best deal out there, but I left feeling like I didn’t get ripped off. |

Just about every country charges for mats, because you get different types of mats and they all cost a different amount
A slow Idrive is one that takes 15 to 20 sec between pushing the controller and something happening. On some of the first 7 Series Idrive software certain screens would take over a minute to load

Why was lojack necessary on your car if you have BMW Assist with the premium package? Aren't they basically the same thing?

some people believe that since Lojack can be installed in various locations whereas the Assist is always there, they feel safer to have Lojack installed because professionals know where to find the Assist.
However, I think this is all BS since they would probably check for the Lojack as well......

About the RTTI, I've kept the nav map up without a route and traffic incidents would show up as a white diamond with a car in the middle. A few days ago, driving after work, I saw 2 separate diamonds... I didn't have to set anything up, it just happened on its own.
I haven't had menu lag, but just 2 days ago I noticed that there was some lag before it was ready to take the next command... seemed to be just a tad quicker a few days before that. What I'm doing is pressing the talk button on my steering wheel, then say "Call name" after the beep, then it tells me "Please say the name of the person..." and this is where it slightly lags... but after that I say the name and it picks the name up, not as much lag... but it did seem much faster a week ago. Still testing it tho, hopefully it's all in my head

BMW assist last for 4 years right? and lo jack is forever. That's why i got that option. And is there any real justifications for buying floormats? Differnet countries may have differnt types of floormats, but to suggest that the customer pay for it-in addtion to the car itself? thats pretty ridiculous i think. |

My NAV screen locked on my 335 coupe this morning on the way to work. Expect I did not wait long enough between menus. I can no longer change map screen .. all of the options to show the maps are locked. Tried removing DVD and even after restarting it will not unlock. I will go by the dealer on the way home today. Wonder if there is a hidden reboot command?

For example..if you go to the traffic section in your nav menu..it will give you a list of all traffic delays in your area and put them in order of how far they are from you... Similarly if you look at restaurants in the area (under the information section) and then go back to the map (I like to leave the map on while I am driving) then on the map there will be the little knife and fork icons on the map. So I think that the map basically displays the last thing or things that you were looking at. Hope this helps. |
