What is the appeal of the 6-series over an e92?
Today I was at the local dealer and saw a 6-series parked right up next to an e92. I noticed they are about the same size - close enough that it doesn't even matter. The main difference is 240lbs and a v8.... (does that ring any bells? it should)
Another difference (excluding exterior/interior style) was the interior space, which seemed to be much greater in the e92. I don't want to believe that the 6-series is its own car just so owners don't have to say they drive a 3-series. Is it just model differentiation BMW is hoping for? Did bmw just make a more luxurious 3-series and double the price? Honestly, if you put a v8 in the e92 you'd have a 6-series at its core. No wait, I take that back. You put a v8 in the e92 and you have an all around BETTER car than a 6-series. If there was a 350i I think no one would buy the 650i at all. Even if it was the same money. The absurdity of the 6-series would really come across. And what doesn't make sense is that in a year you WILL be able to buy an e92 with a v8 for less money than bmw's other v8 coupe. It will have more power too! And if the 6-series is a 3-series but more "luxurious" and with a gentler ride, then the whole idea of an m6 is oxymoronic to me... The way I see it, BMW makes a Coupe. After that it gets a little gray. your thoughts? |

No no, I totally disagree...
6 series is a much more stylish car than the 3.

not with that camel hump on the trunk and the look of a widened and lengthened Porsche 911 Carrera

The 6 is much longer than the 3. It is much sexier, more aggressive looking, and more sporty. Inside it's not more luxurious than the 3 though. The way I see it, 3, 5, and 6 are similar/same in interior luxury. The 7 interior that has a class of its own.

the only argument i hear for the 6 being better than the 3 is exterior looks...you guys would really pay 30k more for styling alone?
i think the problem is the 335 wasnt concieved when the 6 was designed. now it doesn't seem to fit. when the m3 comes out i would guess that 6 sales are going to go down the shitter. btw i like the styling of the 6 much better than that of my 3. not 30k better though... |

Stop the madness! I understand that styling is subjective, but the whole price agrument doesen't hold. Dollars per HP, dollars per square foot of interior.. Don't ever forget that part of what BMW is selling is prestige... The price argument sounds very reminiscent of what you hear on Lexus or Acura forums...

I got to test drive a 6 series and I wasn't impressed. Yea maybe it has a better engine, but I honestly (personally) didn't feel like it was much faster than the 330i I had test drove a few days before it... yea call me crazy but I didn't feel a difference.
I HATED the interior space. When I sat in the passenger side, I could literally touch the dash w/o reaching for it and my arm was still bent (not extended). My seat was backed up too, and family in the back seat said they were ok for legroom but it was still stuffy (I sat in the back too). Exterior looks nice, but inside is just too cramped for me. I like the styling, the back looks fresh and different, but I found myself asking " who in their right mind would spend so much on this car when they could almost jump into a 7-series?" And if you can jump into a 7-series, then you could probably jump into an M5. I'd take either over a 6-series.

6 is a more expensive car, not an entry level car like the 3. Carries more pretige for the people that desire it.
Its like asking the difference between an SL and SLK mercedes. Different livels and price points. |

That's interesting. I was just looking at the dimensions of the 6 vs the 3.
6-series Length 190.2 Width 73.0 Height 54.1 Wheelbase 109.4 Weight 3814 lbs E92 335i Length 180.3 Width 70.2 Height 54.2 Wheelbase 108.7 Weight 3571 (6MT) It's a little longer and wider, but closer to the ground. This gives it a squashed look, and perhaps the illusion that it's (the 6) much bigger than it actually is. Drop a clay model of the 3-series onto the ground from a two-story building and you might end up with a 6-series? |
