Sky vs Virgin

Thinking about moving from Sky to Virgin to take advantage of their TV/Phone/Broadband bundles.

Has anyone used both and can give a comparison on performance/service etc?

One thing that is good with the Sky box is the second output, so you can watch it in another room and control the box with a 'magic eye' and second remote. Does the Virgin box have this?

Virgin was shit for me. Disconnecting from internet constantly. It forced me to end my contract and move to Sky. I have not looked back. There's a difference in the packages offered by a £1 from what I've heard.

In what was are Sky better? Can you get the same programmes via Virgin as you can Sky?

I use the Virgin broadband and its excellent (20mb line), and was also thinking maybe I should move the phone and TV too....

Virgin’s HD line up in nowhere near that of Sky’s. I recently threatened to leave sky if they did not do me a deal on their movie package. I told them it was a very competitive market and there was better deals elsewhere.

The sky girl at the end of the line asked if I enjoyed my HD channels ‘ of course I do’ I replied. She went on to advise me that no one has anything like their HD line up and if you want to go then I will take this as your formal 30 day notice period.

The moral here is that they no their TV offerings are light years ahead of the competition.

Cant comment on broadband and phone

I rate Sky over Virgin but I still think Sky's monopoly on the market is unfair. I hope the BT v Sky price war develops as reported in the news last week.. I pay nearly £70 a month for my package with Sky at the moment

Before you sign your life away with Sky or Virgin, consider what channels you'll actually watch and record for a moment... I always had Sky, and thought it's the best for TV, but finally realised that the majority of channels we watched and recorded were the 'free' channels anyway (BBC1+2, ITV, Channel 4 etc). Got fed up with paying out £65 a month for a Sky+ and SkyHD box,... nearly £800 a year just to watch and record mainly free channels! Now, I have a Humax freeview recorder (can record 2 channels, whilst watching a 3rd or a recorded program... has series link etc.) and have retained my SkyHD box without a subscription, meaning I can still view the 'free' channels through that box, including BBCHD, ITVHD and Channel4HD. That said, the picture quality on the freeview box is stunning! And the best thing is I don't pay anything each month for my viewing pleasure

TalkTalk 8Mb 'unlimited downloads' Broadband, all phone calls including anytime 'free' international calls to a long list of countries (wife's from Spain, so pretty useful!), £24 each month including line rental.

You can get HD on Freeview too soon but you'll need a new box or telly. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/arti...referrer=yahoo

Got to have Sky myself for the Rugby as terrestial channels don't show it apart from the Magner's league stuff.

Yes, sport was the sacrifice I had to pay in giving up Sky,... but fortunately there are other ways of watching it

No sky sports, no sky movies - £10 a week (a round or drinks) is nothing for such a quality service

I got to say I have both and each has its good and bad sites.

SKY HD - great lineup and equipment.
SKY Broadband - ADSL so you could get very low speeds if you have poor lines etc.

Virgin TV- HD contents non exisitant unless using on demand which is great if you liek that. Box iteself is terrible first of all power usage on standby nearly same as when on and wathcing TV. Gets very hot and they have very hight failure rate,
Virgin BBB - for me at least its been great 20MB connection and I average 18mb usually where my neighbough can only manage 2MB on ADSL.

So I actaully have 20MB and phone from virgin and tv from sky, costs more but get best of both

What magic said!

TV - has to be Sky, better service all round and Virgin pissed me off with their attitude when they lost Sky1 (which they've now eaten humble pie and got back).
Broadband - Virgin, wins hands down and always will - it won't be long before they're offering super fast speeds which phone lines (even upgraded ones) won't get anywhere near. I only have 2MB BT as there's no cable to us and its not worth paying for anything more (I'm lucky if I see 1MB).

If I had the option I'd use Sky for TV and Virgin for Broadband & phone.

I have both.

Sky TV is better.
Virgin broadband is better. I have 20mbps and nearly always get this speed. No line issues etc.
