E46 has a nicer sound than my E90
I've had my E90 for a month and a half now and it's broken in.
I've noticed that the car doesn't sound as nice as my bro's E46 325xi. I've noticed it since the first time I drove it and I don't like it. his car is much more throaty with a deep bass sound and growl. the E90 325i doesn't sound as nice imo even over 4000rpms. I love my car. it's amazing to drive and I cannot wait until I get to drive it again. I get exited everytime. The sound of the car is my one true disappointment. I downloaded the 330i video from this site that shows the sound of car. it sounds nice. I guess I'm just disappointed in the sound of my car. it's a sports sedan afteral. Anyone else feels the same way? |

are you willing to get an exhaust ? My e46 didn't sound very agressive to me either when I bought it. I got an exhaust for it 3 years ago and still love it to this day. Maybee an exhaust for your e90 will do the same for you ?

I currently drive an E46 330Ci, and the E90 330i I test drove some weeks ago sounded much better than mine.
Up until now, the sound of the E90 was one of the only aspects on which everybody agreed that was better than the E46. Is your brotherīs exhaust also stock? Maybe itīs because the E90 has better sound insulation. Try comparing both cars with open windows. It is definately a matter of personal taste. |

I had a certain idea from clips on the internet.. but with something like exhaust sound, its almost impossible to perfectly replicate it on a computer.. especially the bass end of an exhaust. I can tell you in general that an exhaust like Remus generally has a more bass-y deep sound to it (I have a remus) and something like an eisenmann exhaust is more high pitched ferrari like sound, Supersprints are usualy a little more quiet then both of those and seem to keep a stock like sound but just a bit louder, but similar style.
these companies usually have certain sound profiles they like to keep accross their range so it might be best to find peoples opinions on the different exhausts on other BMWs (since it will be hard to find out about them on the E90 yet) |

Cool, I look at those companies for sure.
yeah my bro's car is stock. I found the E90 330 and 325 to have different sounds but you're right it's a matter of personal taste. |

hey anthony h,
i had a 1998 e46 323i from new till i traded it for the e90 325. i will agree with you at this point in time only because i'm rinning the e90 in, that the e46 engine note was and is tremendous. it comes through the cabin beautifully. the e90 is mo subdued but i am driving it easier than i did the e46. however, i felt the same way moving from my e36 320 that had a really nice note for a small 6, moving on to the e46. we just need time to adapt to our new environment and just like you, i can't wait for my next drive. i am personally not up to really listening to the engine note just yet, but i will fairly soon once i can push the car a little harder.

Try giving it a few months. My dad's new E36 started making a lot better noise after six months. Either the soundproofing wears a little bit or the engine loosens up and starts to growl more.
I have to admit, my dad's E46 320Ci Convertible sounds absolutely gorgeous. That's what made me switch to a 6-cylinder BMW instead of staying with the 4-cylinder models I have always had. When Dad bought the 320 I bought his old E46 318i off of him. The moment Dad fired up his 320Ci I realised that I had bought the wrong car. Instantly. |

I must admit the car sounds better than what it did 2 months ago. In any case I'm waiting. I just wanted to see if anyone else shared my opinion.
carl_d is right. I've notice that the 5 series and 6 series have a subdued engine note. It's a personal taste. I really like the e46 note. |

i thought i was the only one. i loved the grunt my e46 gave. it was deep, robust, and definitely not obnoxious to me. my 330i seems to be a little more subtle then the e46 but im hoping it will let loose in the coming months.

About the only thing off my CTS is the corsa exhaust growl . The 3er is soo quiet , althought it does sound exotic around 4krpms when it takes off

I am waiting for the eisenman race exhaust to be released, my friend has an E-46 325ci with full eisenman race exhaust no resonators and high flow cats and damn does it sound good! I am just waiting to here it on the E-90 hoping it will sound similar even though it has a different engine...
