335i Defective Oil Sensor

some of you may remember my post about my oil light coming on while parked on a hill idling in my 335i coupe. the first time i brought the car in they checked the computer and said it was fine. the next day while sitting on the same hill waiting to pick up my friend the oil light came on again saying i needed to add oil.

i got a call from BMWNA to follow up on the problem. i explained the situation to them and they told me they wanted to bring it back in to have it inspected further. when the car was brought in, the service people tried to say it was because i was on a hill and nothing was wrong. after explaining to them that BMWNA wanted the car inspected further, they found out that the car had a bad oil sensor in the car. so they replaced the sensor and changed the oil in the car.

Never fails to amaze me how lazy some of these service technicians can be.

You have to admit though, that it sounds reasonable that it would show up as "low oil" if he is on a hill.

Garage List
Can we assume that the light is no longer coming on under the same conditions?

I was under the assumption that provided there is actually enough oil, the light shouldn't show up regardless of inclination. Kind of like the washer fluid, it won't show up as low on a hill unless it was pretty close to really being low but not quiet there yet.

Hi Tedesco & other members,

What a great feature

After reading your post ... It seems that I have the same issue as you, but I have no hill involved. About a month ago I get Oil Warning while driving ... so I slow down and get the car to where I was going within 2 minutes (Quick look & Oil is under Minimum) & I park the car in an Underground parking (Flat, no tilt ), since I was in a rush I figured I would check it when I get back.

Get back, put the car to "ON" without starting it & check Oil, result --> O.K.

Start the car & check it and it's under the Oil is O.K. just under Max Level, where it should be.

The car is at 3500 Km & Now for about a two weeks I get this same occasional warning ON and Off Oil warning while driving or at idle on flat surfaces ; So I'm gessing Oil Sensor.

Just took an appointment with dealer to get this checked out.

EDIT:
FIX:
  • Oil Level in the car normal, even with Break-in period
  • Oil Level Sensor replaced
  • Complete Oil Change
