Question Help me out guys!!! AA BOV problem!

So yesterday while on the freeway I go to overtake a car and speed up the car and about a second or two later I hear a loud POP then my car jerks back, I give it some gas and the e. xhaust note sounds different so I take the next exit and pop the hood and see that my AA. chargepipe popped off where it connects to the intercooler piping. I used the screwdriver that comes with the car and get it as tight as i can and go on my way but drive very carefully and making sure I don't built a lot of boost.

So today, just right now I replaced the regular hose clamps with stronger stainless t-bolt clamps. I then did a couple fairly hard runs while the oil is still warming up then push it when warmed up. When I punch it from second gear the car pulls hard but I noticed my B. OV didn't go off???? I do it again and it goes off but not really as loud as it's supposed to, then do it again and nothing again until the last moment it lets off but REALLY low as if I where driving normally.

What do you guys think is the problem?? It never did this before it popped off

That's happened to me as well.....besides checking the BOV connection to the IC pipe, did you check all other connections related such as the throttle body and charge pipe connection or the vacuum tube connection? If not, try checking those....if all are tight, then I'd say there's nothing to worry about.

Try doing pulls in 3rd and 4th gear and let off the throttle at high rpm to see if the BOV will sound louder. It might be that your not generating enough boost at lower gears such as 1st and 2nd gear?

BTW, are you tuned?

I'll check the connection at the throttle body, I don't think building boost at 2nd-3rd gear is a problem because it was perfectly fine and loud before it popped off. Did yours not let off either after it popped off? I'm running jb3.

Ya mine didn't let off NOTHING when the charge pipe/IC pipe popped off. My car felt like mine old E36 325is when gassing it......LOL. That's how I knew something was definitely wrong.....But after I fixed the problem, I didn't get right back on the road till the next day, and it was fine IIRC.

GL and keep us posted!

Well I just took it out again and the BOV dumped off fine and loud when I punched it from 3rd to 4th and shifted around 4k-5k, then did the same two times right after but this time shifted around 5k-6k and it didn't dump off until a second or two after letting off the throttle but I did notice a whine that got a little louder while the rpms climbed (sounded kinda like those old school nerf footballs that whistled). Do you guys think it could be the BOV itself maybe not closing all the way while punching it and that's where the whistle is coming from? Or something else? I really hope it's just the BOV!...

I know I said this has never happened before but I just realized that I've never really took the rpms that high. Could the BOV not be closed all the way when taking it that high and causing the no dump/low dumping and whistle /whine? But IIRC I've heard the whistle/whine before the BOV but not this pronounced since the charge pipe blew off yesterday.

When driving the car normally and doing light pulls the car pulls like it should and the BOV dumps off nicely. It's just if I punch it hard and take the rpms close to redline that this occurrence happens, hope you guys can help me get to the bottom of this!

IIRC, you have a 6MT, right? Well, I have 6AT step and nothing blows off between shifts, only when I physically let off the throttle from my foot does the BOV sound.

So I'm not quite sure if what you're describing is normal for a 6MT. Maybe other 6MT owners with BOV can chime in........

Are you shifting normally or power shifting and slamming into gears? Because I think if the shift happens so quick/seamlessly, then it's less likely for the BOV to go off and be as loud. I could be wrong though, like I mentioned, I have 6AT step.

No expert on this, but isn't there a vacuum hose that goes to the other side of the throttle body that is used to equilibrate pressure in the charge pipe when releasing the throttle / shifting / etc? Could that have come loose when it disconnected?

Yea there is and when I spoke to the tech at AA, he also said it could be that. I'll check it when I get home from work.

Anyone else got any suggestions?

Oh, I forgot to mention one thing, maybe/maybe not it could be this:

There's a metal conduit of some sort positioned right under where the silicone coupler is that connects the charge pipe and the IC pipe. That conduit COULD potentially wear a hole in the coupler. That happened to me and I was totally unaware of it until ETS did their testing for their FMIC on my car. They replaced the coupler and showed me the hole, should have taken a picture of it, but didn't. That might be where the leak is coming from if there is any.

You can probably check that by running your fingers on the bottom side of the coupler where it connects the chargepipe and IC pipe. See if you can feel anything such as a hole or any wear and tear.

You have a stock intercooler right? Otherwise I'd tell you to check your intercooler piping... I had a problem where I blew it right off cause I didnt have the T clamps tight enough. Definitely sounds like a boost leak somewhere... or that the blow off valve vacuum line isn't attached or has a kink.

It's been pretty damn cold when I get off work so I haven't checked it out yet, hopefully today or this weekend I'll uninstall the BOV and check all connections. Thanks to those who gave their input! I'll keep you updated!

dont feel like reading all the posts, so not sure if its been answered. I had this problem. I would punch the car and when i let off the BOV wouldn't release all the time, and car would respond oddly.. Was freakin me out, and i was scared to get on it.

In my case it was my routing of the vacuum line. In order to keep it away from hot parts at the time, i went behind the brake fluid reservoir.. Well, the vacuum line found its way between the reservoir and the body and was pinching it enough i guess to prevent the release.

I rerouted the line, and ever since then my BOV works like its supposed to.

Could oil have clogged your BOV?
I have no experience with this but I am just guessing. :-)

Did you get the chance to check out the under side of the silicone coupler that connects the IC pipe and the charge pipe?

again it's super cold and raining out so I won't be working on it today but I did run my fingers around the coupling while still clamped but haven't completely checked it out, no noticeable damage.
