Driving with Moonroof open

Is there much wind noise when driving with the moonroof open at freeway speeds? I was very happy with the aerodynamics of my 328 and the relative lack of wind noise. I was wondering what the experience is like in the new 330i.

There is very little wind noise and no buffeting at all. I have driven my E90 with the moon roof open at 100 mph and no problems.

Well I have a different take on the noise level.

It's louder than I expected, noticed it on the test drive but of course didn't stop me from buying, but I've had several other cars whose moonroofs were quieter (examples: Explorer, Accord, Expedition, Yukon). But then I think the A/C fan is too loud, too.

Maybe this is a consequence of great aerodynamics with the roof closed....??

I guess my criteria would be, being able to carry on a conversation without really raising my voice, with the roof open.

For me, it's really too loud. I was suprised. Talking with that open at freeway speeds is less than optimal for us.

It does get a bit loud. When going more than 100kph ( 62mph ) , then I normally close it , since you can't hear the radio with all the wind noise.

You need the hifi-loud speaker system!!! When I'm on the highway, i can drive fine with it at 120km/h - and then I just crank the sound up a tad and I don't even notice!!!

I don't think the sunroof is ment for high speed driving though, I think it's more for a boulevard cruise...60-80km/h kind of driving...

I still think it's

To me it just adds to the irritating seat belt flapping.

I have found on my E46 that driving with the driver's side window and the passenger's side rear window open at the same time with the other two windows and sunroof closed gives great air circulation around both the upper body and on the legs without a lot of wind noise and buffeting. Great when wearing shorts. I only do this when driving alone so I don't know what it would be like for passengers and I don't know if it would be the same on an E90.

I don't usually drive at highway speeds with the roof open - but often with it popped up in vent position. I find it to be the quietest roof I've had in that position. As another poster mentioned, opening the two rear windows slightly will degrease the turbulence some.

It depends a lot on the wind direction relative to yours. There are times when there is no wind, can cruise with it open at 80MPH and not have a problem. Almost always drive with the back popped up though. But I can't hear anyways, and used to drive a Wrangler with only the windshield . . .
