At least 795 335d's have been sold in the U.S.
I was curious. The 335d qualifies for a $900 tax credit. I've searched all over to find where the tax form for the credit lurks, but the IRS search function is virtually useless.
I know that the credit phases out after 60K cars are sold in the US, and the IRS tracks sales progress. Of course, because the IRS is involved, the data has been put together in a confusing way. Sales in 2Q'09 and 3Q'09 were tracked but don't match the cumulative totals for the year. That leaves open the question of whether or not the difference was due to additional sales in 1Q'09 or sales between 9/30 and 11/6 (the last date the information was updated) or both. I think it's interesting that the IRS' information implies that fewer sales were made in 3Q after the $4500 Eco Credit was put in place in late July than occurred in 2Q. My guess is that the production switch to the new model had something to do with that, but I would have thought the credit would have more than made up for the lost month of August. Oh well. I think this sales information goes a long way in explaining why I have yet to see another 335d badge on the road. I hope to see more soon. I've seen at least 4 different 335d E90's on the road in San Diego. BMWs are pretty popular in SoCal. And we have easy access to ULSD.

Haven't seen a single 335d here in the Lehigh Valley. I haven't seen many 335i's either...we don't have great access to ULSD, it's definitely around but many stations don't have it.

That's actually lower than I thought. I remember the number 1200 was floating around about 8 months ago, although that may have included X5 diesels. I've seen 4 335d's in total: the one I test drove at the beginning of summer (which disappeared promptly after), a white one parked in DC, my own, and a space gray one that had shipped in along with mine.
In any case it is a rare ride indeed, but that makes me feel kind of exclusive so I don't mind. |

And for the record for the OP, the 335d wasn't available to be sold 1Q09, I don't believe.

The tax form for the rebate is called Form 8910.
Turbo Tax will pick it up if you use it. Don't forget you might also be able to claim a deduction for sales tax. |

I'm surprised they didn't have the Q4 numbers...seems like things were pretty quiet on the 335d front until after New Years when that Popular Mechanics article came out...I know of only one other 335d in Southern Ontario (and it's ironically a Space Grey on black, like mine....go figure).

I've never seen one on the road in Houston, I know my dealer sold two during 09 one that red color sent to all the dealers and one black one that is suppose to live somewhere close but I have never seen it....The "d" is rare....rare indeed....

These sale figures do not bode well for the 335d in NA. I believe you can claim the tax credit for the year in which you bought the car, not the factory's model year designation which nowdays no longer follows any convention.

I don't think that the sales expectations were high. The 335d is very much an initial toe in the water. Much planning is contingent upon political decisions and global energy markets. If a few pieces of appropriate legislation get passed, we could be awash in 320ds. Not likely, however, given the bizarre directions that the current 'patriotic' winds are blowing.

I agree, don't really know what's going to happen with the 335d. I often think how any car company is going to meet the new MPG standards without bringing HP diesels into their line, and I think they are hear to stay. With a $4500 credit they are bring them here at a loss, I really wonder how long this can go on too.

Ouch with dismal numbers like that, I'd be very surprised if the F30 has a 335d. Don't they even sell more M3's than that in a year? More likely we'll get a 320d/120d instead or none at all.

That's the issue though, BMW isn't selling enough of them to really make a profit after paying tons of money for Federalization. Lowering the price would just make it worse, OTOH with the $4500 eco-credit it is splitting the difference between the 335i/328i. Keep in mind the Euro 335d has a much simpler emission system than ours. So why would BMW continue importing a car that public doesn't seem to be too interested in? (Trust me, I love this car though, have one halfway across Atlantic by now, just wish more Americans would be interested in the 335d)

To make the diesel market work in the USA there is a wall that has to be broken down. The 335d is nothing revolutionary -- to the USA mindset. 35mpg? Meh, even with the stump-pulling torque. The 320d high efficiency model, with better than 50mpg, running circles around Priuses and Insights, with the right Euro/green/high tech/world citizen marketing theme, can change things. Ditto for X3 & X5. SUV folks are a lot more willing to opt for macho diesel image. The Euro executive image, however, is a very difficult sell in the USA.

I wouldn't have bought the 320d if that were the only option. Instead, I would have gone the other direction and picked up an F10 M5 or waited for the F30. The 335d provided compelling options in the midst of a lack of others.

BMW needs to let more people drive these cars
Just came back from a road trip to Nashville. The 335d is amazing at speed. 30 mpg at a steady 89 mph, simply leaps from 70-100 for passing, and quiet. Heated wheel is great too. And the stereo. If more could try, more would buy.
