AFE Oil or Dry Filter?

Just received my AFE Stage 2 intake and noticed that the oil filter is drenched in oil. It is all over the bad and by the look of it, it seems that it is over oiled. Not sure if its normal.

Let me know for those who have bought the AFE intake and was it drenched in oil upon opening the filter box.

Don't want to take a chance and damage the MAF sensor because of the excessive oil.

Still trying to decide if I want the Oil AFE Filter or the DRY AFE Filter.

Let me know your input.

Thanks!

I would stick paper towel into all crevasses and let it sit for a while so that the towel soaks some of that oil in and then install it.

Just saw your other thread but these are done by machine so it's doubtful it was over oiled. Can you upload some photos?

This is a video of the oiling process to give you an idea:

BMW uses TMAP, for the record.

Dry forsure... i dont know why more people dont use dry. You never have to oil anything and they are much easier to clean.

dry is easier to maintain because you dont have to oil anything but oil filters would last longer. i use oiled filters and typically only change the oiled filter once over the lifetime of the car. in between the change of filters, i clean and re-oil the filter every 7k miles or so.

Oiled filters provide more flow as opposed to dry filters. Yes more maintenance is required but if you want to best gains you need an oiled medium. Dry filters are thicker so that they can trap small particles. Oiled filters are thinner and require the oil because the oil catches the particles a thicker dry filter would. FYI, just a random but important fact, don't ever run your oiled filter without oil. Doing so will allow those small particles through and damage your engine. In this case you'll get no warranty coverage from either BMW or the aftermarket filter manufacturer.

oiled filters in general will not filter as well as a dry filter, even with the oil, so keep that in mind. The trade off is more flow, which has the potential to make more power.

This site has some extensive testing on different brands of filters:

There is some good info here about oiled versus dry. They each have their pros and cons:

Oiled
-max flow, best performance
-requires oiling (all aFe oiled intakes and filters come with a recharge kit good for 2-3 uses)
-not as high filtration as dry

Dry
-maximum filtration
-easier maintenance, no oil
-less air flow

I believe the 325/328/330 motors still use MAF only N54 uses TMAP. Could be wrong but other BMW non FI motors are MAF based. OP lighter oiling and frequent cleaning is always best but if you live in a very dusty locale go dry.

AFE reuseable dry air filters are very good. I have one in my Rav4. Go dry instead of oiled.

Is this true? I didn't get a recharge kit with my oiled drop-in?

Is there a way I can get an exchange with aFe? I can return the oiled filter to them in exchange for the dry one?
