Engine Swap?!

I recently blew my engine on a 330i.....Obviously I need a new engine so i was wondering if I could throw in a 335i engine?

If so, what would need to be done? Do I need a new tranny???

Also if anyone knows or is selling used engines please let me know!

PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hope you've got the $$ champ, alot more goes into it than an engine swap. You're better off just buying a 335i.......

Full motor + transmission + FMIC + ECU, etc.... If you're going to spend that kind of $$, you might as well throw in an MV10 or something worthwhile. Otherwise it's a waste of your time.

Can it be done? Of course....anything with enough $$ is possible.....but you're going to spend about double or tripple of what just buying a used CPO 335 would cost.

You'd be better off just parting out your 330 and buying a 335. I don't think anyone on here will tell you any different.

For the same price you could probably throw in at least an M3 engine of not the M5 engine. I say go for the v10.

If you have the money to play, then please think about throwing a V8/10 in there

Exactly. It sounds stupid, "blew" a motor, but, this happened to my aunt's E46 M3 due to lubrication problems, and my friend's X5 due to cooling problems.

The former was under warranty, the latter was out-of-pocket. The dealership must love these cases as my friends was north of 11k.

Think about how much profit must be built into that figure. Grandpa got a rebuilt motor in his day for $900 installed. And that was on a turbo Volvo.

Whatever the decision, good luck OP, at least I know two people personally who were in your shoes with a BMW.

I would just repair it as cheaply as possible (with good parts), then if you really want 335, sell your current car.

There are soooo many things to consider. Not that it can't be done, just a lot of homework if you want to do it. Plus you will end up running into things as you go.
ECU, exhaust, transmission, wiring harnesses and routing, intercooler, oil cooler, brakes (335 has larger brakes, but not a requirement), etc....... just a lot to consider.
My 0.02... replace it with the same engine that is in it.

Agree with the above. Find a replacement engine for the 330, sell it and get what you want. I think there are going to be way too many parts needed and the headache that would come along with trying to do this.

Not saying it can't be done though.

This is the most sensible advice, IMO, if you wanted to keep the car. If you wanted to sell the car, it is hard to guess if you would recover the money.

OP probably got the car looking just how we wanted it, so he is probably trying to keep the chassis. Unfortunately, unless he's willing to part with a huge amount of money. He should probably go with the same engine.

This. An engine swap is a huge undertaking (especially in these cars), even for someone who knows what he's doing.

Someone over on e46fanatics started an engine swap back in 2008 and as far as I can tell he still hasn't finished it. It is a huge task, and unless you happen to have the cash, the time, and an extra car for your dd I wouldn't even think about it

You are probably going to spend more than your current vehicles value getting the parts and retrofitting them than you would buying a new car.

i think that is dum that u blow it out in the first place.. because that is not smart... first u spend money on a car and now a motor.

If you want a cheap motor, used 6.0 vette motors and trans can be had for under 5k all together, and such a vast aftermarket as well, and many many shops are used doing custom swaps with LS motors into non LS motored cars. (these swaps are popular for a reason)

But if your "pure" then i vote V10

Then again if your looking for the sensible choice, part it out and get a 335
