OEM Battery replacement question
My 06 330i battery is about to expire. It cranks weak if I don't drive it for a few days. Also the idrive gives me a low battery icon and shuts down after a minute without the engine on. The stealership wants $500 to replace it. I searched online for other options. It seems most battery manufactures make a group 48 type for my car. I just wanted some advice on battery makes others have purchased. So far I have found:
Deka Odyssey (cannot find on modbargins anymore) Interstate MEGA-TRON PLUS - 85 MONTHS - 640 CCA Sears group 48 Diehard

Anyone ever figure out the necessity of having to "reset" the DME when swapping out the battery? Supposedly our batteries characteristics are "learned" by the car's computer and that info needs to be reset.

The cars tend to be hard on batteries because of all the accessories, particularly if they are not driven much.
The factory batteries are absorbed glass-mat (AGM) batteries, not something you can pick up at Sears or WalMart for $100. When the battery is replaced, the car's computer needs to "know" when the battery is changed so that the alternator will charge it correctly. Search out "battery registration". BMW has brought us the $500 battery change! http://findarticles.com/p/articles/m.../ai_n32129310/ The OEM AGM battery itself lists for $246, but you need to communicate with the car's computer with a Bavtool or similar interface and tell it that you've replaced the battery. Douglas and Exide also apparently make replacement batteries with BMW PNs that will work. Search out "battery registration" using the search function -- there are several threads about it. The bottom line is that I think we are all going to need the Bavtool software interface and a Windows laptop for when the warranty expires.

A lot of folks have swapped the OEM battery for lightweight (Braille) ones without difficulty. I am evaluating the OEM unit in the Mini cooper to save about 15 lbs.

The weight and shipping cost of batteries will usually cancel out any savings -- but most BMW dealers offer a parts discount to BMWCCA members.
The major cost here seems to be the labor -- it looks like most dealers are charging a couple of hours labor for the testing, installation and battery registration. An indy BMW shop might do better.

You don't need to use an AGM battery. During registration, the specs of the new battery have to be input and there should be a choice for AGM or not. I saw this on another forum, but don't really remember where so I can't find it again...

You can, but you could end up with a severely shortened life for your new battery because the car might be under/over charging it since it's charging it according to the specs and age of the old battery.

I'm totally ok with $200 for an OEM battery, it's a BMW, everything, absolutely everything with the car is overpriced. But $500, that's insulting....like $1800 for front brakes on a M3.

My factory warranty expired last summer so I'm SOL when it comes to the battery being covered. I just find it ridiculous that BMW stealerships want $500 for a battery and installation. I was thinking of the Interstate Mega-tron battery for my 330i. It's about $150.

I didn't resurrect it. Some one asked about 3rd party batteries for the E90 on this tread today. Mine still works with no slow cranks so I'm not in a terrible hurry to get one.
