Flat tire this morning turns into anger
I was driving to school this morning and about 5 min from my house the FTM came on and alerted me i had a flat. No worries I drive over to my BMW dealership and tell them i have RFT and the tire and wheel warranty and would like to have a new tire. They say theyll do what they can and call me when its ready. They got some very nice older man to drive me back to school. After soccer practice my dad picked me up and drove me to the dealer. I go to the cashier and she said 746 dollars. this was my face she then goes OoOoO not you the man behind you heres yours...$0 . As im walking out to get my car I read the invoice. It says they patched my run flat. I was under the impression that doing this was very bad for RFT. I go inside and speak to the tire expert. I proceed to tell him that i was under the impression RFT shouldnt be plugged. He said, yes well these are very expensive tires. I interupt and said yes well I have the wheel and tire warrant, a 650 dollar option. He says well if you plug it on the side its ok not on the middle. He then goes on to say how tire companies dont approve of plugging run flats because they can be held liable if they dont hold up. I told him I was pretty sure plugging RFT ruins the structrual integritity that make the RFT run flats. He gives me a run around and says if you have a problem come back and well give you a new tire. by then it was approaching 6 and i was getting upset and tired after having soccer practice for 2.5 hours so i leave.
Do you think i should pursue this further and get a new tire? Im personally offended that they think im stupid enough to not know about my car, and that they would dare to patch my tire when i purposely paid for this warranty package for situations like this.

Plugging, in my opinion, is an option only to be exercised by an owner to save money. If you paid for a warranty ($650), then they should replace the tire.

if i had purchase the warranty i would demand a new tire.
what tires do you have? i went to my bmw dealer and they said they don't patch the tire as it is against BMW policy. so my SA directed me to a guy who would patch it. my nail was in the middle too. it was between the treads. |

Yeah would have to agree! I didn't get the tire warranty and already had 2 flats. I remember an article in Roundel about it and basically saying the Bridgestone is a crappy tire and plugging it does affect the structural integrity of the tire.

Ask for a replacement and the insurance company will pay for it not the dealer.

Is there a consensus on whether to get the tire warranty or not? Sounds like run flats are a hassle...a friend with a Z4 said he had to replace 3 so the warranty was worth his while. Man, I'd rather just have those non run flat Michelins that someone posted there were gonna get to replace the RE050A's.

I'd push for a new tire. When they tried to sell me the warranty they said it covered cases of road hazard and "no questions asked." So for them to just patch it seems like a rip-off.

if you want to make them worry, draft up an official document saying they will be liable if the fix fails and you wreck or damage your car in any way. they will replace on the spot

In my Mini cooper I patched various runflats a few times with no problems -- but that was to save me money because I did NOT have a warranty, nor did I ever drive the car out of town or too hard. With the warranty I'd insist on a new tire, the same as I would insist on genuine BMW parts if my car was in an accident, not a bondo job.

The tire warranty is apparently backed by BMW Canada (in Canada), is this the case for US? If so, I would contact BMW Customer Service...

about three months ago, i caught a nail in a Bridgestone RFT & took it into the dealer. they said it could be plugged & plugged it (nail was in the middle of the tread as i recall). last week, i noticed a bulge in the sidewall of that same tire & took it to the same dealership. they replaced it for $384. insurance which i bought at purchase will reimburse.
did the nail cause the failure of the sidewall? maybe. btw: my wheel & tire insurance (road america) REQUIRES that claim be made (and approved) BEFORE any work is done on the tire. after the fact & they won't reimburse. |
