If you are under 45k miles, and under the 4 years, you can get a BMW factory warranty that is better than CPO. They started offering them late last year. I have one on my 08 528i I purchased from a Pontiac dealer on trade for my G8 GT.

Here is the link to the offering on BMW site: http://www.bmwusa.com/Standard/Conte...rotection.aspx

I thought that warranty direct was legit? But I dunno, I plan on getting the BMW and just bite the bullet on the price. The CR report was the last thing I needed to justify the warranty (335i made the list for below avg. reliability)

warranty direct is no different than the rest of the 3rd party warranty. They are out to get your money and will find any possible way to deny your claim. Beware.

Go to penfed.org. Check out their "mechanical breakdown protection" plan offered through Route 66. I'm sure there are other places that offer it as well, but as far as I know you can't buy it directly through Route 66.

I had it for my previous vehicle and it was excellent with no deductible. It is an "exclusionary" policy, meaning if it's not specifically excluded it is covered. Excluded items are typically maintenance items like belts, hoses, lightbulbs, brakes, etc. Essentially, if the problem is in a grey area, then you get the benefit of the doubt and it is covered, like the steering colum shaft issue.

I paid $1700 for a 2006 Ford F-150 King Ranch with 27k miles in 2008. Coverage was 6 years from the date I purchased the truck, NOT the in-service date, or 100,000 miles on the odometer. I sold the truck in 2009 and because I never used it they gave me back $1200.

I sound like a commercial, but it was the best coverage I found for the money. It was certainly better than the Ford CPO program.

My current BMW is CPO though, and I did that because I got a really good deal and like the relationship with the dealership. Plus the BMW CPO coverage is pretty good.

So you never had to use the plan...So no idea if they actually pay or not?

I got the gold package 7yr/100k miles for $3900 which includes everything except trim pieces like moldings and carpet. The radio is also excluded. My 5 is a base model with single CD player. The platinum level was $450 more and that included stereo/navigation. If I had nav, I would have gone platinum.

I never did use the plan. However, several military friends have, and the company, Mercury Financial paid even with the car at the dealership instead of an independent.

I just checked the website though and penfed now offers Rt. 66 Warranty instead of Mercury Financial. Terms and contract seem the same though. Penfed has a good reputation so I doubt they would offer a plan that cheats people. I'm looking for a car for my father-in-law and we're going to take this route for his car. I still have faith in Penfed offerings.
