BMW Adds Social Networking to Cars (and Geotagging)

Hot off the press. This is BMW's big announcement today, via The Diesel Driver.

Without much fanfare, BMW has added geotagging and social networking capabilities to its cars that allows drivers to geotag their location with a few clicks in iDrive and share it with friends via e-mail. If a route has been entered into the car’s navigation system, the destination will be sent in the same e-mail.

This is the second update to BMW’s online services functionality within a week.

Will the new iDrive be updateable to this ?

EDIT: It seems to just work with the current BMW Assist.

as far as i know, you also need to subscribe to the BMW Assist Convenience Package to get these added services.

I bet people will figure out how to get the geotag to forward to twitter. It´s not that hard to do. But it´s not that granular (i.e. turning left) either.

ya my SA was telling me about this last month, its really cool.

What exactly did your service advisor know about the social networking feature last month? BMW was really tight-lipped about it.

If you don't have iDrive (or this service) you can do this using the "FirePin" application for the iPhone.

Seems like an unnecessary distraction while driving. Is it cool...HELL YEA! But I feel like people will be idiots with it.

It really isn't a much (if any) of a distraction, esp. if you are sending your location and/or route to a stored address - OR if you are doing this before pulling into traffic (which of course is the smart way to use it).

Jonathan: I tried BMW Search a few times yesterday and it went away from a few minutes and then returned an error message that the service wasn't available try again later. What minimum integration level SW do I need in the car for this feature to work

Are you signed up for the Convenience Package?

All BMWs with CIC-based iDrive can support BMW Search. Only 2010 BMWs manufactured starting in Sept. 2009 support TTS however.

I've sent my location to my blackberry a few times. Sadly, when I click on the links for both Googlemaps and Blackberry Maps, I get nothing but error statements. That is unfortunate, because I can see a situation where I am parking in a strange neighborhood,and I mail myself the location so I can use the Blackberry's GPS to get me back to the car.

It has worked for me but I have not tested it extensively.
