Will the new 3er have improved reliability?
Just wondering about your impressions going forward. Not that I don't enjoy spending time at the friendly dealership...

There's just no way of knowing. I mean we can only guess that some cars will be more reliable/have higher quality in the future than in the past. However, some will go down in quality or just stay the same. Reliability is measured over a period of time so to even talk about a car that hasn't even yet been released is a little strange IMO. If you're worried about it then don't buy the first model year.

Has BMW reliability as a whole improved over the last 15 years?
From my experience as a continuous owner since 94 (5 models) my answer is no. Then again, people don't buy BMW's for reliability. |

Then youve been very unlucky. My E36 was horrific from day one. My E46s were pretty good with the second being nearly flaw free. And both my E90s have been pretty good too, although the newer 335 had one significant issue, but it was computer based, so Im not sure where that lies.

reliability is difficult to say IMO, its simply to early to judge this new crop of BMWs for the long term. But atleast from a quality of materials standpoint, I think there will be a big improvement, as the new Z4, new 7 series and new 5 series have really taken a nice leap forward.

Don't buy a first model year, or early production car.
Hopefully they will work out current issues like in todays models, especially the N55. |

I totally agree with this one, no offense to Germans (actually anything European) but the problems are always on the first two years of the models life. Though it is not always the case in every car, it is sometimes a random chance.

have to disagree based on my experience. I have a 06 e92 335 , zero issues only one trip to the stealer for an oil change and brake fliuid change. The car has ben flawless, wish I could say the same about my wife's parking lot skills. My mom drives a 99 e46 the very first run of e46's to hit NA she has owned the car over twelve years and only this last week has she had an issue , one ignition coil went south , a couple of months ago the windshield washer pump went but she switched fluid brands and I have heard that others have had similar expewrimces . Prety good for a car that only has been to the stealership for one service its entire life.

Was reliability an issue with the E90? My E46 had major problems.

I have had 4 E46s, none of them had problems of any kind. My E92 didn't either but overall it felt more "loose" while the E46s had a rock solid feel to them.

E46 coupe only three sensors in 70k
Only three sensors and door seal in 70k and it still only needed maybe .5 quarts of oil in 5k miles .
Also manual transmission. |

BMW's are hit or miss. You will have some who have trouble free experiences and others with horror stories....like my 01 330i in 85k miles = 3 window regulators, power steering failed, coolant expansion tank exploded, A/C compressor failed, my GAS TANK brace failed on one side, DSC control unit and steering angle sensor. Oh and the instrument cluster. Phew!

Trouble-free, rock solid first year 2006 330i here. I'd be wary of the DI engines until they get the HPFP figured out.

I'm at 32k and have had an injector go once. Kinda annoying but that's been my only problem with it. It's not even rattling yet.

How much more reliable does it need to get?
FWIW, I've only owned two BMWs in the past couple decades (I buy 'em and keep 'em unless they are broken, mainly because I don't like having bills, but also because they don't need to be replaced) and neither gave me any trouble at all. I can actually say there's not been a single day that that I've not driven the car -- due to a fault of the car -- when I wanted/needed to do so. In fact, my 1993 Bimmer didn't die and lasted me for 158K miles (11 years) with never a single issue. As it seems that most folks here lease and thus get a new one every few years, I cannot imagine how they'd ever encounter reliability issues (barring the HPFP thing, and even that doesn't happen to most BMWs); their cars are all so new. My current 3er is going on four and not one issue yet. I have no plans to dispose of it until it dies or I don't need it any longer.

If I recall correctly, and I may not, the model was 2007, but they were released in late 2006.

My E39 manual went 166K miles with an A/C issue and that was it. Needed a clutch and new cats at the end, but that was after 11 years - pretty good I would say. Now have 07 E90 step, which has been bullet-proof through 58K with only normal maintenance other than RFT issues which are not the car's fault. I will have no problem recommending another BMW to myself when the time comes.
