Best Digi Camera For a N00b photographer?

I am in the market for a good Digicam. There's quite a few excellent photographers on here like Diesel and Nikki.

The thing is I want a digicam that will just allow me to point and shoot. I don't want anything too complicated/professional where I have to mess with the F stops, shutter speeds, etc...

Just a good point and shoot digicam (Does this even exist?). If anyone has any suggestions I would be grateful.

Thanks in advance,
Mike

How much do you want to spend?
I have a Canon SD500, and I would recommend the newer version SD550.

Thumbs up

Sony Cyber-Shots rock, even the entry-level models.

Most of these photos were snapped with a higher-end one:

How much do I want to spend? I dunno, around 400 or less. Is that reasonable for a good digicam these days?

an SLR is a bigger camera with interchangeable lenses and lots of controls as opposed to a point and shoot where you just well point and shoot.

You can get an excellent point-and-shoot camera for less than $400. Even for less than $300. Even for less than that!

Single-Lens Reflex. It uses a mirror between the lens and the imaging surface, be it film or a CCD, such that the viewfinder utilizes the imaging lens instead of a separate one. At the moment the photograph is 'taken' the mirror folds out of the way and the shutter opens and closes or the CCD is scanned. SLRs will also have more adjustments to contend with such as aperture and shutter speed, white light balance for digitals, manual or auto-focus, etc.

Generally an SLR will have an interchangeable lens whereby you can change from a short focal length lens (i.e., 50mm) to a longer one (i.e., 400mm). Point and shoots tend to have a single focal length lens about the size of your thumbnail. Canon Rebel is/was an SLR; a Canon Powershot isn't. A Nikon D200 or F100 is an SLR; a Coolpix isn't.

The decision on what to buy comes down pretty much on what you intend to use it for. If all you want is to snap some pretty party pictures, a P&S works wonders. If you're interested in wildlife (four legged type) photography where you can't get up close and personal with the subject, a camera with interchangeable lens is better. Landscapes can be photographed with both short lenses and long lenses; SLRs or P&S.

I have an Canon SD500 and love the thing. I have bought about 5 various Canon cameras for family members because I love Canon and now they love them too.

I'm currently looking for a good SLR deal....

I've used a fuji finepix 3800 for a while, its a decent camera, easy to use. I will be getting a dslr soon to replace it although I hate lugging around a huge camera..

I have that same camera..I love it...my only complaint it there is NO stability program, and with a camera as small as ours you kinda need it! I think I am going to get a DSC- N2 or a T50. 10mp or 7.2mp and touch screen! I love touch screen stuff!!

Digic today are all point and shoot with great result.
You can set the camera to full auto mode, which will disable almost all functional buttons that you won't go wrong.
SD800 has intelligent to locate human faces to focus.

I would that the SD800 is a bit of an over kill for the average user. I have a 7.1 SD500 and thats a little much for me for 90% of my pictures.

Definitely go with one of the Canon SDXXX series cameras. I personally have an SD400 and it always takes great pictures. I am in no way a skilled photographer, but it will make you look like one.

I took the following pictures with the basic settings on my camera (with no photoshop editing). The original resolution was 1600x1200 (I think thats 3 megapixel mode) but resized to 800x600 for uploading.

We did fork out almost 50K for something to get us from A to B, but we did limit ourselves at that rather than a lambo.

I'm just thinking that 10 MP is overkill when your arpature is only ~.7 inches.
