Mobil 1 synthetic 5w-30?

I have read DIY guides here saying 5w-30 should be alright. But after a search I am also noticing people are using Mobil 1 0w-30 as well. Which one works best? I do about 50% highway and 50% city driving. Temperatures are in the 50-70F in the upcoming months.

Okay, my vehicle is out of warranty so I might just pick up a few quarts of the Mobil 1 5w-30 full synthetic from the local parts store. Thanks!

Then what's the point of this thread? TrackRat answered your question very well.. the 'best' oil for you is one that has been approved by BMW as LL01.

Among other things, and there are a lot of other things, the HTHS of Mobil 1 5W-30 (as sold in the United States) is too low for this application. There are real physical issues here, not just warranty technicalities.

Mobil 1 0W-40. Castrol Syntec 0W-30 (NOT 5W-30) or oil from the dealer. There are others, but these are your realistic choices.
