What should I use to flush power steering fluid? Would this work?
I want to flush out the power steering fluid but I'm sort of confused which fluid I should be using. Does anyone know where I can get the OEM fluid and will it affect anything if I mix the new (different brand) and old fluids together?
I plan to just simply use a turkey baster to suck out as most old fluid as I can and fill it up with new, then steer a bit and do the same thing over and over again until I used up three quarts. Would that work and do I need to not allow air into it like brake bleeding or anything like that? Would these two fluids do the job? Thanks for the help and sorry for asking so many questions. I'll make sure to do a DIY video once I have changed the fluid. Fluid 1: http://www.amazon.com/Peak-Performan...0966117&sr=8-1 Fluid 2: http://www.autobarn.net/d4-atf.html |

Do not start randomly mixing fluids.
Take a look at the top of the cap for the power steering reservoir. It probably says "CHF 11S". Assuming that it does (you don't say what car you have, but I am assuming that it is an E90), that is what you need. You can get it from the normal BMW parts suppliers, or probably any parts supplier that specializes in European cars. This is a common fluid in Europe, but it is not found in the general American auto parts stores. It is a good example of why you have to be careful with any European car to get the correct fluids. As for how to drain it -- I don't know of any official procedure. For what it is worth, which may not be much, I do your turkey baster approach with each oil change (just once though). It is far from a full change, but I reason that it keeps the quality at a reasonable level. |

Napa Auto also sells CHF-11s on the shelf. That stuff is pretty expensive to do the sucking up and replacing method you are talking about. I am sure there is a drain plug on the PS box, but I don't know anything about it or the accessibility of it.
Do not mix with any other fluids, it will cause problems. |

Most racks will not have a drain, however most pumps will. I just have a feeling it would be a pain in the ass to get to on this car.
