Driving holiday suggestions

Hello American Northwesters. I'm planning a trip over to Vancouver from Belgium to visit a friend and I'd also really like to visit San Francisco. So I thought I would fly into SF, spend a few days there, and then drive up to Vancouver.

Can anyone help me with planning a route from SF to Vancouver via Seattle? I'd like to incorporate some great mountain roads and maybe some scenic coastal highway and of course I'd like to see a few "sights" on the way like Mt St Helens and Yosemite. I'm planning to come over in June.

The other question I have is a rental car. I'm prepared to spend a bit to get something decent as the thought of driving a Chrysler Sebring makes me lose the will to live. I'd like a 3 series convertible or a Boxster or Z4 but it's difficult to find companies that have these and will let you do a one-way rental. If it is not possible to get something like this then I could probably live with a new Camaro but that's as low as I would go. Any suggestions?

Does anyone know if I can drive for a week in the US on my Belgian or Australian licence? Or do you always need to get an international licence? Anything else I need to think about when planning a driving holiday in America? I've only been to the US once before and that was New York so I didn't drive.

Anyway, thanks in advance. I look forward to all your suggestions.

Cheers,
Andrew

I've driven both directions from Portland, i.e. to SF and to Vancouver. Here's a route that covers the best of both directions in Google Maps: http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&sour...8&z=5&dirflg=d

I live in Seattle and am from Belgium. Send me a La Chouffe, some Neuhaus, and a Gauffre, and I'll plan the whole thing for ya.

SF to Seattle is about 13 hours straight. Seattle to Vancouver is 3 hours + customs.

Lots to see, lots to do. Should be a great great time.

@spellbmw Thanks for the link. I will study it.

@bozola You're a Belgian in Seattle? Vlaams or Francais? I'm actually a New Zealander living in Belgium but I learnt Flemish. I will happily bring you a La Chouffe and a gauffre (wafel) but not Neuhaus. There is a much better chocolatier in Antwerp called Burie - amazing.

I am an original Bruxellois that speaks some french. Moved to the states around my 11th b-day. All relatives are still in the motherland.

I was just kidding about the stuff. I will gladly help you with your trip. Just let me know what sort of help that you need. Like I said. SF to Vancouver will be a Beautiful trip.

Frédéric.

I figured

I just want some suggestions on good roads to take. Coming from Belgium where it's completely flat it would be nice to drive through some hills and mountains.

And also I'm still having trouble finding a decent rental car company. Any ideas?
