M1 weight update today?
Not sure if this is new or not, but bmwblog.com is reporting this today:
"The new 1,500 kg M model is powered by an updated/upgraded N55 engine coming from the M Division producing 345 horsepower. The reason behind the M1 project is not to completely focus on power, but rather build a car more entertaining and thrilling to drive than any BMW ever built before." http://www.bmwblog.com/2010/05/07/sp...t-nurburgring/

Unless, the max torque stay at 400Nm, which would make the torque band to 6000, but would still be expecting it to redline only at 7000. If the engine actually peaks at 400Nm at 5000 and only drop off 25Nm each 1000 up to 7000 and redline at 7500, that would be a worthy S55 though.

It's still a porker. That's dissipointing that the weight would not be less. 3300 pounds for this car is still heavy in my opinion. I kinda figured it would not have more power than 350 or so. Especially since the M3 will have a similar engine but more power. But I guess if these figures hold 9.57 lbs./hp is not to bad to deal with.

They use the z4 3.5is engine proberly. An other grab in the AG parts bin.
The M1 is proberly the cheapest production M car of the century. |

The Z4 sDrive35is has a N54 in it. It has been confirmed by Scott that the M1 will get the N55 power plant.

Most cars gain weight while gaining power. If this one dosen't, I say great. It must provide a more visceral experience as well. Lets keep this On-Topic. There is already an engine spec thread.

Nothing is confirmed until BMW confirms it.

Maintaining weight with the extra goodies like LSD and wider tracks I think is an achievement in itself.

at 345hp, I know there's more than power to an M car..... but I personally wont fork over 55k w/options for 345hp. Most ppl who have already driven tuned n54's probably won't either.

I don't buy the 345HP either. I was excited about the weight. Scott eluded to a weight reduction in one of his posts.

I have a question for everyone crying about the HP. NO N54 motor actually produce 300hp. It is a fact that it is underrated. Why wouldn't they underrate this one? I shouldn't be defending BMW here b/c finding an M1/1M wont be easy since its not here for long.

3300 lb is a LOT more than I expected. Can scott confirm these numbers? I hope its not true but assuming it is, is there a chance this will be a 135is? I think I'm just gonna keep my 135i now

that's an interesting point.
except it's quite a different story when it comes fully integrated with //M calibrated DTC as well as a full warranty, doesn't it? or are you going to continue with your logic and also write that you can also tune a 135i to more than 345hp also? you can add almost anything to a car, but when it comes as a fully integrated package from the manufacturer, you're starting with a foundation that is already superior to the standard car. |

3300lbs at 345hp is good, depends on the driving dynamic. But it's not enough to definitively push the choice ahead of other cars I want
