Red face Cancel 2011 135i order and wait for M1?

As some of you may know, I've very recently placed an order for a 2011 135i DCT w/M Sport (non-Euro Delivery).

With the news of the M1 launching in less than a year (for United States), I've been in a real bind on whether to cancel the 2011 135i, and getting a 2012 M1 instead. Or, just gung-ho with the wallet and get a M3 now. I own (and plan to trade-in) a Z4, so I'm not limited by a lease.

So I can:

1. stay with the 2011 (knowing that N55 is probably not as mod-friendly as N54)
2. cancel 2011, wait for 2012 M1
3. pile on another ~$17K now and ED a 2011 M3 (not sure when the M3 refresh is due...)

Thoughts? Recommendations?

My 2008 335i/sports/6mt will be out of warranty Dec 2011.

So the M1, M3, and a Cayman make my short list today.

Pick up a used M3/Cayman and change it over when the M1 comes out?

Cancel and wait for the M1. I am sure you will manage to put up with your z4 for another year. Go for the M3 if you need 4 doors. Otherwise wait to drive the M1.

Well, The M1 will not be faster than the M3 for sure, either in a straight line or on the track, unless you will spend some cash on tuning it. If you like the M3 and can afford it, I suggest you go for it. The M3 will be the last high revving N/A ///M engine. One thing is for sure, cancel your order and buy the M3 now, or drive your Z4 for now and wait for the new M1.

Given what we have learned about the M1's engine and suspension, I can't see how the M1 wouldn't be faster around the track. 0-60...Scott said the M1 wouldn't step on the M3's toes, but that could mean the M1 is only .1 seconds slower.

If I get the M1 it will be much faster than the M3 (for a professional driver, not for me). With new Brembo brakes, KW V3 CS suspension, Akrapovic titanium exhaust, KN intake/filter, Noelle Motors ECU (~450 HP) the M3 has no chance.

Wow, that's a lot of pretend tuning for a car that doesn't even exist yet.

I know. But I am sure all this will be available. Akrapovic has titanium system for M6, M3 and 335i. They will surely make an exhaust for the M1. Brembo are availble for "all" cars, 1xxi, 3xxi, X5, X6, M3, M5, M6, X5 M, X6 M, so of course also for the M1. KN filters/intake is available for M3 E46 and 135i/355i. Could also be one for M1. Noelle Motors has upgrades to 400 Hp for 135i/335i and to 620 Hp for 750i/X6 xDrive50i, and up to 670 Hp for X5/X6 M. So there will surely be something for M1. KW V3 CS is available for M3 and 135i, so should also be for M1.

If I were you, I would just wait. The 135 is a well known commodity at this point--whereas no one has seen, driven, or experienced the M1 to this point.

I would guess that if your Z4 is in good shape, you aren't going to lose much by cancelling your order--you would always be able to order another one in a few months if you decided the M1 or M3 weren't for you....

Hold out for M1. When it comes out and isn't what you wanted you will have an extra year of money savings to put towards that M3.

I would cancel. You're going to be really pissed once the M1 comes out and seeing all the buzz about the car. You can't go wrong with getting a M3 or a 135i now, but why not see if the M1 lives up to the hype. That way you really have some good choices! I've had my heart set on a CPO M3 coupe when my lease is up, but I'd be crazy to do that without comparing the M1.

I just cancelled the 135i order

Then, spoke to the client advisor and became the first person on the M1 waiting list at that dealership

I figured if I change my mind in the next few days/months, I can always order a M3 or reorder a 135i.

Thanks for everyone's input!

I think the M1 will be all over the road... 335i, previous 135i, and some M3 owners.

Wait to see what the official announcement is for the M1 then decide what you want to order. Always good to not have to be in a rush!
