Smaller Wheel size in rear for AX/Track?

An unorthodox solution i've heard about on corvette and Porsche boards is to use a smaller wheel size in the rear. For instance using a 18x8 w/245 in front & 17x9 w/275's out back.

Upsides being reduced rotational weight, quicker acceleration, more sidewall profile to absorb bumps & give better breakaway feel.

Downside's: speedo out of whack! unknown if 17's will clear stock Z4MC brakes. Might not be legal for SCCA A Stock class.

Has anyone tried this for AX / track work?

You have to figure out what tire you plan to run first. If the tire you want is only available in 40 profile in 17s and 35 profile in 18s then it doesn't make sense to run 17s when the overall diameter is almost the same with either wheel size.
