Failed NJ State Inspection (Emissions)
So my inspection expired this month and I got my car inspected yesterday but I failed the emissions test because of code P0442, which after searching comes up as this, Evaporative Emission (EVAP) System Small Leak Detected. My guess is that my gas cap is loose but I heard that the SES light that is triggered will go away after awhile of driving. It has been about 3 months and everytime I fill up, I always make sure it is tight. I don't know what to do because I start my internship on Monday in upstate NY and I live in North Jersey. Can I drive with a rejected inspection? What can I do about this error code? Can it be cleared and inspected again?
Thanks in advanced guys. BTW, not sure if this is the right forum. It was was emissions related so I thought it should go under exhaust. |

gas cap leaking? lol. I got rejected because of that too but I seriously doubt that the cap is actually loose. I brought my car to another inspection station and it passed.

None, mechanically or electronically. Except audio.

I has the SES light go on about 3 times, and I kept bringing it to the dealer and they told me the gas cap was loose. I kept calling BS, cause the gas cap only goes on one way and it "clicks" when tight. Well my wife has an X3 with similar engine had same problem and turned out it was bad O2 sensor. After that was changed, never happened again. I got another SES about 6 months later, and finally came up as bad O2 sensor. No problems since that was replaced. Might be worth looking into.

You have like 45 days with a rejection sticker I think? or is it 15 days?
You can get reinspected anytime, go to a pepboys to verify all systems are ready. |
