My 6MT Impressions

2007 e92 coupe

Its been about 1000 miles I've been driving my 6mt now.. It had 27,00 when I bought it. From a stop light going into 1st, it is really notchy and not smooth at ALL. 1st to 2nd yields the same results. Not only that but sometimes the transmission locks and I cant get into 1st!

Does anyone else have this problem? What can I do to fix?

The 6MT on these cars suck. I've had two E90s with 6MT, and just switched to step w/ paddles.

Once every 500 miles I wouldn't be able to put it into 1st. Shift into 2nd then put in clutch and go to first, that should do the trick.

BTW my tranny went out at 40,000 miles. I'm a professionally instructed driver (Multiple Racing Schools).

Also get a BMS CDV.

Get a modified CDV. Do a search on the forums... CDV = clutch delay valve.

I've heard you can also do a complete delete of the CDV, but don't quote me on that one.

Cdv R&r Complete

Yes - I did this & I really can't tell the difference. I am sold on a TO Bearing issue. My symptoms:

1.On shut down with clutch out (neutral) get a rattle - if clutch in (no rattle)
2.In my garage or alone at a stop light I can hear strange clinking noise with clutch out (neutral) ~ with clutch in the noise goes away.
3.Gear shifts are notchy but think this a normal
4.Some problem getting into reverse but again think it is normal ~ I just release clutch and try again and it works. THinking that a tranny oil change could smooth things out.
5. Shifting smoothy 1st-2nd-3rd is only accomplished by feathering the clutch or agressigve rpms above 3k ( which I like but 2.5k shifts should be smooth).

Throw~out bearing issue?

To the dealer on tuesday to strat the complaints.

I have occasionally had trouble getting into 1st gear. Really annoying when it happens cause I am usually at a light that just turned green. But I only have it happen once in a while. I am original owner with about 33k miles. Never bothered to take it to dealer cause they usually useless. I just figured it's how BMW shifters are. Every stick I have had has had it's own little quirks.

2nd gear on up is great, first has its quirks. Now I just anticipate better than I did. But you are bang on. It's just the way this one works. 2nd Bimmer MT too. They both did the same shit. Unreal on the ultimate driving machine, but I've adjusted to it. Most of the time it's fine. Weird, though.

Drain the fluid and replace w/ Royal Purple Manual Trans Fluid. Improves the shift quality significantly particular downshifts.

I got 131,000 mi on mine. Yea it's a little notchy but you get used to it. Mine does the whole "I don't wanna go into 1st" quite often. I just go into neutral and let the clutch out to get the gears spinning. Then I clutch in and select first and it works fine. This does put a little more stress on the 1st gear syncro but as long as you don't ram it into gear it's fine. The 6MTs are pretty reliable. Just change out the fluid ever 60000 mi along with the diff fluid.

You're not alone. I recently installed a short shift which has made the problem much more apparent, due to the loss of leverage.

My comment is that I'm confused by some of the suggestions I've seen on this issue. Maybe if I knew a whole bunch more about the 6MT they would make sense, or I could reject them as wrong.

I'm also going to try asking at BMW - can't wait to see the pretty SA try to get into 1st, and tell me that's the way it's supposed to be

Original owner of my 6MT e90 330 with 70K. No CDV delete on my car. No issues ever, always shifts for me, even after I installed the OEM SSK. I recently changed the tranny and diff fluids and it got even smoother.

Just don't do what I did - Shifting while going around a swooping left will actually torque the tranny to the point where 2nd gear will be where 4th usually is. Pull down the gear lever for a 3-4 shift and bam, in 2nd. Mostly my fault, but I can say that would've never happened in a car where the shifter/tranny wasn't so sloppy. Very expensive lesson to learn :-(

I'm at 45,000 mi on my 07 e92 335i 6MT. and got my whole transmission system replaced to a brand new tranny at a dealer due to issues with shifting into 1st and 2nd gears.I mean it was not that bad. but it worked out well with a nice SA.

SA told me it was almost a $6,000 work that was done.

everything works great now.. thought you guys might want to try what i did

Exact same thing happens on my car.. The previous owner had the clutch replaced under warranty and it didn't change. I had issues getting it into 1st and 3rd on cold mornings and the dealer ended up replacing the transmission. For the 1st 1-2k miles it was great! It was like shifting through butter, but the symptoms came back. I have to put it in another gear to get it back into 1st sometimes and also still have the clutch rattle as you're describing. I guess it's just part of the way it's designed.. keep us updated on what the dealer says
