Unhappy Got a state referee ticket. need some help

hey guys i just got pulled over and was told to pop the hood
the cop wrote me up for my intake and my car is not street legal until i get it reffed.
I have an Injen Intake which recently got carb approved but I haven't had a chance to contact Injen to get the sticker.
I also have a HKS SSQV Blow off Valve, JB3, and Top Speed section 3 mufflers.
Do you guys think any of these things are effecting emissions and will cause me to fail my state referee test?
And since my intake is carb approved i should be okay to keep it on for the test right?
thanks for your help.

Cops really had it out for you.

Your car must scream "punk kid."

Sucks dude, I'd probably die laughing if a cop tried to get me to pop my hood. No emissions laws for me down here in FL.

That sucks man.... pretty insane story, never heard of cops making people pop the hood without probable cause. Anyways, I don't believe an aftermarket intake will cause you to fail an emission test.

Given that I don't live in SoCal, I cannot give my personal experiences there, but cars here literally have black smoke coming out of their exhaust and pass emissions tests here with flying colors.

yeah it sucks.
do you guys know if a blow off valve and section 3 mufflers effect emissions at all?
and since the intake is carb approved i should pass the test right? even if i dont have the sticker?

You are going to have to take off your intake, BOV, and anything else under the hood that isn't stock. The BOV will vent intake gases into the atmosphere, so it won't be smog legal. The mufflers might be okay, since they are aft of the cats, but the state Ref is pretty strict, and it may depend on what kind of mood he is in.

If you have the CARB stickers with the proper E.O. numbers attached to them, you could probably leave the intake on, but they may run your car on a smog dyno, so I'd take it off just to be sure.

Pretty common occurrence upon the import crowd. Threads like this are a dime a dozen for forums of 350z, Evo, Sti, etc.

I have actually been to the state ref with my honda, and I was really surprised how much he knew about it, and all the various engine swap combinations, ecu's, and stuff like that. I'm not sure if they know as much about bmw's, but I'm sure they know their way around the typical turbo motor and know what to look for.

I didn't know a cop is a mechanic too, I would fight it and try to explain that the cop didn't know what he was looking at.

I hate CA cops. With a ref ticket there is no way around it. Once you get that ticket you have to see the state ref. Get the carb sticker for your intake, if you cannot get it, it has to go back to stock. BOV has to changed back to stock. No aftermarket one is legal. JB3 he won't see but he will smog your car. I would say just set it to stock setting. You can keep the exhaust as long as you can pass a 95 db sound test.

Ref tickets are the worse. I come from a world of STi and Evo's so I know all about the game.

damn this sucks
they should at least allow you to drive your car.
all he wrote me up for is my air intake
i am going to take it out and my BOV and set my JB3 to the stock map
do you guys think he will fail me for my mufflers?
that is all I am worried about now

and yet they don't have the right to ask for your citizenship status, but they do ask you to pop the hood. AM I missing something here?
well OP, that is why I pay more and I buy my stuff from DINAN. I can have fun and not have to worry about cops nor Warranty issues.

Dinan stuff is cool but its not cool what it does to your wallet. And i know someone is going to say 'pay to play'
its all good though
as long as i dont get busted for exhaust..

Actually, you do have the legal right to refuse to pop your hood, and refuse to let them search your car if they ask. Most people don't realize this. But if you do say no, chances are they'll make you sit on the curb for 3 hours while they get a warrant written up and delivered, so they can search your car without your permission. So it's usually a lot easier to just pop your hood and get it over with.

Yes, you can have fun paying out the ass for an under-performing tune under the false pretenses of "warranty."

Forget the fact that a "DINAN" car is immediately flagged and can never be CPO'ed. Last time I checked BMW and Dinan don't have the best of relationships either.

In the meantime I'll have fun with my non-flagged, non-Dinan car.

PS: This is coming from someone who had various Dinan products. Last e46 had intake, free flow exhaust, dinan throttle body, software, etc. In all honesty there are better products out there for less money.

OP: That stinks that you have to go through all of this. I'm in Socal, and there are frickin' deadbeat cars, trucks, and school buses with gasly black and stinkin' smoke coming from their mufflers. Go figure

And Noc, you know what I'm going to say...but I'll say it anyways....OEM mods or bust

I would put the stock exhaust on. I wouldn't risk it with the ref.

California is a special place. Anything that makes the engine produce more hp has to have CA approval. Bullshit if you ask me. I hate this state. I cannot wait to get out of here.
